The Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index(FWI) System consists of six components that account for the effects of fuel moisture and weather conditions on fire behavior. The first three components are fuel moisture codes, which are numeric ratings of the moisture content of the forest floor and other dead organic matter. Their values rise as the moisture content decreases. There is one fuel moisture code for each of three layers of fuel : litter and other fine fuels; loosely compacted organic layers of moderate depth; and deep, compact organic layers. The remaining three components are fire behavior indices, which represent the rate of fire spread, the fuel available for combustion, and the frontal fire intensity; these three values rise as the fire danger increases.

A method of engraving in which the design is bitten into the plate with acid.

The plate is first covered with an acid-resistant resinous substance. The artist then takes a finely pointed needle and draws the design out of this resinous ground. The drawing instrument does not cut into the metal surface. The image which will print is represented by the areas in which the copper of the plate has been exposed. The plate is then immersed in an acid bath. The acid eats into the plate only in those areas not protected by the ground. The length of time the plate remains in the acid bath determines the depth of the etched lines.

In 1882 the brothers Carmagalle took out a patent for an armour-plated diving suit. The most satisfactory modern version of this apparatus is the rigid jointed Neufeldt-Kuhnke type, which is lowered and raised by means of a cable and allows the diver to observe and make limited movements.

Following Lethbridge and Rowe's exploits there was little to no mention of the armoured diving suit until 1838, an almost 80 year lull from Lethbridge's death in 1759.... W. H. Taylor designed the first known armoured diving suit with articulating joints in 1838. The suit was to be surface-supplied and had accordion-like joints of spring steel, reinforced and water sealed with leather. From his drawing, it seems that either Taylor had no intentions of his suit being a true atmospheric diving suit, or else had no understanding of the depth-pressure relationship. The suit appeared to exhaust directly into the surrounding water from a short hose located at the divers waist. Therefore, the interior pressure would have had to be greater than the water pressure at depth. Also, the soft cloth joints of the suit would have most likely collapsed when exposed to any considerable pressure.

A list of all the important formation tops picked in the well by the petroleum geologist. Notice there are two numbers for each top. The first number is the actual measured depth in feet from a fixed elevation reference point on the rig(usually the KB, or Kelly Bushing, which is located about 1 feet above the derrick floor). The second number has a minus(-) sign in front of it. This is the calculated depth of the formation top in relation to the permanent datum, which is usually sea level. This type of top is known as a "subsea" top. Subsea tops can be easily compared to each other because they are all adjusted to the same elevation reference.

A test to determine the shearing strength of cohesive soils in situ. The appliance consists of four blades projecting from a shaft at 90° intervals, and as these are rotated in the ground they generate a cylinder of soil thus determining the unit shearing strength of the mass in its natural environment. In a pneumatic plant the germination bed depth will often be greater than one meter. If left alone, the heat produced would accelerate growth and the roots would matt together forming a solid mass. This was the problem that Galland had in his first plan. To overcome this, the bed must have a perforated floor with a chamber below so that air can be blown through the bed. Hence the term pneumatic malting. This air must be humidified to stop the grain from drying out, but more water will be lost from the bed than in floor malting. Additionally, the grain bed must be turned using large helical screw turners.

The injection screw is divided into three parts. The first half of the screw compresses the material and removes the air. The flight depth is constant. The second part(third quarter) of the screw has decreasing flight depths, thus reducing the volume. Reduction of the volume increases the friction of the polymer molecules as they rub over each other, increasing the temperature. At the end of this section all the material should be melted(plasticized). The third part(last quarter) of the screw is a pump. The flight depth is constant but smaller than the first section because melted material takes up less volume than powder.
