The Minus Eighty Degrees Celsius Laboratory Freezer for ISS [International Space Station](MELFI) is a fully integrated rack facility, hosted in an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack], to condition, freeze and store life sciences and biological samples aboard the Space Station. MELFI will also be used to transport frozen specimens to/from the Station flying fully powered inside the Mini-Pressurised Logistic Module aboard the Space Shuttle.... MELFI characteristics :[a] Volume : 300 litres total in 4 independent dewars(minimum configuration 1 dewar at-80 °C; 2-4 dewars in combinations of 3 modes : below-68 °C,-37 °C to-23 °C, +0. 5 °C to +6 °C; [b] Temperatures maintained for 8 hours without power Sample storage : cell culture 1-10 ml, fluids(blood, media, etc.) 1-500 ml, tissue 2-10 ml, whole specimens 10-500 ml Cooling time(from +23 °C to-68 °C) : 2 ml 18-25 min; 10 ml 44-56 min; 500 ml 460 min.

MELFI [Minus Eighty degree celsius Laboratory Freezer for ISS] est un congélateur/réfrigérateur destiné à la Station spatiale internationale et plus particulièrement aux modules américains (USLab) et japonais (Japanese Experiment Module : JEM). MELFI permet le refroidissement et le stockage d'une large variété d'échantillons (de 2 à 1000 ml) issus des différentes expériences de science de la vie menées à bord de l'ISS [International Space Station]. Le volume de stockage des échantillons est de 300 litres répartis en quatre enceintes froides (dewars) pouvant fonctionner indépendamment et à trois niveaux de température différents (+4 °C, -26 °C et -80 °C). La production de froid est assurée par une machine cryogénique fonctionnant selon le cycle thermodynamique de Brayton [...] Un circuit d'azote permet d'assurer la distribution du froid vers les enceintes froides.

The House of Commons is the custodian of an important collection of art and artifacts reflecting Canada's social and political history. Many of these works are displayed throughout Parliament, including its committee rooms. This painting, Ghosts of Vimy Ridge, is currently on loan to the new Canadian War Museum, but its permanent home is the Centre Block's historic Railway Committee Room. Portraying the flickering spirits of departed Canadian soldiers making their way toward the summit of the ridge, it was painted in 1929 by Australian artist William Longstaff and purchased by Captain John Dewar, who donated it to Parliament in 1931.

Le domicile permanent de cette toile, Les revenants de la crête de Vimy, est la salle historique du Comité des Chemins de fer de l'édifice du Centre. La peinture est actuellement prêtée au nouveau Musée canadien de la guerre. Représentant les esprits vacillants des soldats canadiens se frayant un chemin jusqu'au sommet de la crête de Vimy, le tableau a été réalisé en 1929 par l'artiste australien, William Longstaff, et acheté par le capitaine John Dewar, qui en a fait don au Parlement en 1931.

A vessel having double walls, the space between being evacuated to prevent the transfer of heat and the surfaces facing the vacuum being heat-reflective; used to hold liquid gases and to study low-temperature phenomena.

The cryogenic Dewar vessel is a flask-in-flask reservoir. The interwall space is filled with multilayer insulation and evacuated. High vacuum is maintained for a long time, which secures stable technical data throughout the whole operation period. The inner and outer vessels are made of aluminium alloy.

[The] Low Temperature Microgravity Physics Facility... LTMPF is a liquid helium dewar with attached electronics that will house two instrument inserts, keeping them cooled below 2 Kelvins for six months. The facility permits real-time monitoring of the data and allows transmission of commands for telescience operations. Precision sensors of temperature, pressure, and acceleration, modified to function well in the cosmic ray environment of Earth orbit, are supplied as parts of this facility.

The MELFI will provide a temperature-controlled volume of not less than 300 liters(10. 6 ft³) in four Dewar-type modules(vacuum-insulated containers). Each Dewar will have a capacity of not less that 75 liters(2. 6 ft³) of internal storage volume.

MELFI dewars are cylindrical in shape and contain four "pie" shaped segments called Trays [.] Each Tray can accommodate samples in box type containers and vial holders of different shapes and sizes. In addition, the ISS [International Space Station] is investigating the development of middeck locker compatible nitrogen dewars sized to accommodate MELFI trays. These middeck dewars could then be flown on non-MPLM [Multipurpose Logistics Module] flights in the Orbiter middeck or in Spacehab.

Flame Emissivity Detector. Another detector based on monitoring a specific property of a flame, its emissivity, was developed by Grant, who mixed coal gas in constant proportions with the effluent from a chromatographic column; this coal gas/effluent mixture burned at a wide stainless steel jet. The emissivity of the flame, changing as the flame’s carbon content is varied, is measured with the aid of a metal reflector, glass condensing lens, and selenium photocell; these are held in place from each other at their proper optical distances .... For low background emissivity values, response is nonlinear. However, by controlling the coal gas flow rate to maintain emissivity between 0.60 and 0.80 mV, detector response is linear over a wide temperature range.
