The heating of sludge, often under pressure, to condition it so that it is more readily dewatered by a static or dynamic dewatering process.

CONT

Thermal conditioning. There are two basic processes for thermal treatment of sludges. One, wet air oxidation, is the flameless oxidation of sludges at temperatures of 450 to 550 °F and pressures of about 1200 psig. The other type, heat treatment, is similar but carried out at temperatures of 350 to 400 ºF and pressures of 150 to 300 psig. Wet air oxidation reduces the sludge to an ash and heat treatment improves the dewaterability of the sludge. The lower temperature and pressure heat treatment is more widely used than the oxidation process.

A composting process which can be used to treat waste food or other organic materials in a liquid slurry or semi-solid form.

CONT

Feedstock is fed into a digester where air is forced through the material to encourage the growth of aerobic microbes. The process is exothermic and the heat is maintained at thermophilic conditions of between 55-65°C. The retention time of the process is usually between two and five days, as degradation is rapid. Following digestion the digestate is usually dewatered or dried. The output is a bio-fertiliser.

The typical press fabric run includes tensioning and positioning rolls, and provides a means to condition and dewater the felt to keep it permeable and open. A variety of mechanical and/or chemical conditioning treatments are used depending on the requirements. Most systems utilize hydraulic energy(in the form of high-and low-pressure showers) as the primary means to loosen and flush out fines and fillers from the fabric structure. Following the showering treatments, the fabric is dewatered and the loosened filling material is removed either by a suction box or a "wringer press".

For simple thickening of very dilute stocks up to 12% consistency, multidisc thickeners... can be used. A fiber mat forms on the face of each sector as it submerges in the vat of stock. After complete submergence, vacuum is applied and more pulp is deposited while filtrate is drawn through the mat. The initial filtrate is relatively cloudy and can be segregated(by the action of the end valve) for dilution uses. The later(clear) filtrate is sufficiently free of fiber to be used for shower water. Following emergence from the vat, the pulp mat is further dewatered and finally removed from the filter media by a knockoff shower. Multidisc thickeners are most commonly used as save all devices, i. e., to recover fine fibers from white water and reuse the water.

Pressure Washers. Rotary pressure washers... are similar in operation to rotary vacuum washers, but appear to offer some significant advantages. The pulp mat is formed on the surface of the cylinder and dewatered with the aid of pressure applied inside the washer hood(i. e., outside the cylinder), as opposed to vacuum inside the cylinder. Because the driving force for mat formation, dewatering and wash liquor displacement is outside the cylinder, the interior of the washer drum can be utilized for a more sophisticated liquor collection system; therefore, a single washer can be operated with two or three displacement stages. The higher pressure also allows higher-temperature wash liquor to be used and greatly reduces foaming. The closed vapor circulation system facilitates collection and treatment of odorous vapors.
