The residual set of an Apollonian packing.

CONT

The Apollonian construction concludes with five circles, three given and two Apollonian, which together define six circular triangles. Repeating the same procedure, we draw the largest inscribed circle in each triangle. Infinite further repetition is called Apollonian packing. To the resulting infinite collection of circles one adds its limit points, and one obtains a set I call Apollonian net. A portion of net within a circular triangle ... is to be called Apollonian gasket.

CONT

Formation of an Apollonian gasket : the points that are never inside any of the circles form a set of zero area which is, as it were, more than a line, but less than a surface. Its fractal dimension therefore lies between 1 and 2, though its exact value is not known. It is approximately 1. 3.

CONT

Chain dimensioning also known as point-to-point dimensioning, is a method of dimensioning from one feature to the next. Each dimension is dependent upon the previous dimension or dimensions. This is a common practice, although caution should be used as the tolerance of each dimension builds on the next, which is known as tolerance buildup, or stacking.

CONT

Two plans of dimensioning are used on mechanical drawings.... One is called point-to-point or chain dimensioning; each length is dimensioned from the end of the preceding one. These dimensions are usually taken directly from the designer's sketch; however tolerances are cumulative and, rather than averaging out, usually add or subtract so that intermediate clearances may be disturbed. In the other plan, called datum dimensioning..., all dimension lines in each direction extend from a datum or reference line or plane which is usually the first machined surface.

CONT

When several dimensions emanate from a common reference point or line, the method is called common-point dimensioning... Dimensioning from reference lines(base or origin lines) may be executed as parallel dimensioning or as superimposed running dimensions... Superimposed running dimensioning is simplified parallel dimensioning and may be used where there are space problems... The origin is indicated by a circle and the opposite end of each dimension is terminated with an arrowhead. Dimensions are placed near the arrowhead.

French

CONT

A sectional view taken from the location of the section cutting plane and placed in any convenient location of the drawing, generally labeled in relation to the cutting plane.

CONT

Revolved and removed sections are used to show the cross-sectional shape of ribs, spokes, or arms when the shape is not obvious in the regular views... The removed section differs in that the section, instead of being drawn right on the view, is removed to an open area on the drawing... Frequently the removed section is drawn to an enlarged scale for clarification and easier dimension. Removed sections of symmetrical parts should be placed, whenever possible, on the extension of the centre line.

The ratio of the linear dimensions of the original to those of the final reproduction. References such as "half size", "quarter size", "same size", "size as", etc., relate to area and are therefore confusing and should not be used. Following are examples of preferred methods of marking copy :(a) Per cent--such as 25%(b) Fraction--such as 1/4(c) 0. 25X(d) Dimension marks, such as a line drawn parallel to an 8-inch dimension and marked "2 inches". All these expressions indicate that a linear dimension is to be reduced to 25% of its original length.

OBS
