Subject field(s)
  • Astrophysics and Cosmography
  • The Sun (Astronomy)
  • The Moon (Astronomy)
  • The Earth (Astronomy)
CONT

Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, causing the Moon to cast a shadow on a portion of the Earth's surface.... during a total solar eclipse, the Moon aligns perfectly with the Sun and covers the entire solar disk, resulting in a momentary darkening of the sky. As a result, the corona becomes visible as a halo of glowing plasma encircling the Moon.

Domaine(s)

  • Soleil (Astronomie)
  • Lune (Astronomie)
  • Terre (Astronomie)
CONT

CONT

Optical disk storage involves the use of a laser beam(e. g., from a helium-neon laser) to write the data on the surface of a metallic disk. The laser beam is tightly focused to form a spot of light, or the optical stylus, which burns tiny pits onto concentric tracks(rings) on the disk to write data. The laser beam scans the pits, which reflect light from the disk to photodetector to read data.

DEF

A device for lifting water with a bucket without the removal and reinsertion of the bucket.

CONT

The bucket pump is similar to the rag pump and lift disk pump but does not require a tube to draw the water up. It is not very common anymore, but can still be found occasionally. One advantage of this pump is that the buckets don’t turn upright until they are well below the surface of the water. They fill with clean water, and bring up less of the scum that often floats on the surface of a well. Large old sailing ships sometimes used bucket pumps. They were also used on farms and many other places. Of course, the length of the chain and the number of buckets can vary greatly.

Mercury probes are precision instruments that enable rapid, convenient, and non-destructive measurements of semiconductor samples by probing wafers with mercury to form contacts of well-defined area. The probes may be connected to C-V plotters, curve tracers, or doping profilers for a variety of measurements. Mercury probes eliminate time consuming metallizations and their convenience make them tools for production process monitoring applications. Mercury probes either contact wafers with a single circular mercury dot contact on the front surface and a large area metal disk for low resistance back contact, or they contact semiconductor wafers with concentric dot and ring mercury electrodes as well as a backside contact.

The hard-disk drive is a wonder of modern technology, consisting of a stack of disk platters, each one an aluminum alloy or glass substrate coated with a magnetic material and protective layers. Read-write heads, typically located on both sides of each platter, record and retrieve data from circumferential tracks on the magnetic medium. Servomechanical actuator arms position the heads precisely above the tracks, and a hydrodynamic air bearing is used to "fly" the heads above the surface at heights measured in fractions of microinches.

A triangular excrescence arising from the anterior surface of a vertebral body and extending superiorly or inferiorly across the discovertebral junction. [From WORTH, 1986, p. 301.]

OBS

It is believed that traction and claw osteophytes represent different stages of a single disease process. Horizontally oriented excrescences, or traction osteophytes, initially form at the osseous site of attachment of the outer annular fibers(Sharpey fibers) to the anterior vertebral surface. Subsequently, periosteal deposition of bone and progressive disk ossification convert the traction osteophyte to a clawlike excrescence. It is possible that traction osteophytes, representing an initial stage of the ossification process, indicate an unstable discovertebral level, and that their conversion to claw osteophytes indicates increasing spinal stability that allows progressive ossification of annular fibers. The reflex percussive technique is predominantly applied for grooving of existing runway surfaces and represents a cost-effective alternative to saw-cut grooving techniques. It has been successfully applied on various types of runway surfaces to provide adequate grooving. The technique can also effectively be used for other purposes, such as removal of rubber deposits in touchdown zone areas or for the restoration of micro/macrotexture of a degraded existing runway surface. The reflex percussive technique uses star-shaped or pentagonal disk flails.
