The ultrasonic scalpel has been used in surgeries of digestive and cardiovascular organs utilizing the mechanical effects of ultrasound.

An ultrasonic scalpel provides a focused area of dissection with excellent hemostasis. Since the tip vibrates, it becomes warm. The temperatures that develop... are lower than those used in electrosurgery or by lasers. Coagulation occurs as a result of protein denaturation when the vibrating blade sticks to proteins, forming a coagulum that seals small vessels.

The scenario is analogous to that of an operating theatre where the surgeon and his/her assistant remain at the operating table and a circulating nurse manages supplies and instruments. The circulating assistant remains "clean" avoiding direct contact with contaminated tissues and body fluids. Upper pole fullness describes a rounded, full area of the upper breast often seen in overfilled, round implants. Lower pole constriction describes the lower half of the breast to be constricted and result in a small crease to areola ratio. Dissection can prove disastrous if done incorrectly resulting in bottoming out.
