DISSIPATIVE STRUCTURE [2 records]

Record 1 2008-02-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Physics)
  • Mathematics
CONT

The name dissipative structure expresses a paradox central to Prigogine's vision. Dissipation suggests chaos and falling apart; structure is its opposite. Dissipative structures are systems capable of maintaining their identity only by remaining continually open to the flux and flow of their environment.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mécanique des fluides et hydraulique (Physique)
  • Mathématiques
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematics
CONT

... the dissipative structures that led to life on the planet probably began at the chaotic interface between solid, liquid, and gaseous surfaces where there is flux of high energy. Some scientists speculate that at this chaotic nexus, autocatalytic chemical structures... constituted a form of protolife.... Responding to the far-from-equilibrium environment, the descendants of these first autocatalytic, self-referential, self-similar structures linked together to form a larger structure of feedback loops called a hypercycle.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mathématiques
DEF
