Écoulement hypodermique. Cet écoulement se produit quand il y a infiltration peu profonde de l'eau dans le sol et que cette eau suit la pente à l'intérieur des profils de sol. L'eau hypodermique est en général plus fortement chargée en produits dissous que l'eau de surface, surtout en nitrates, qui constituent les produits les plus solubles dans les sols. La composition chimique de l'eau hypodermique reflète celle des horizons du sol. Elle peut aussi être chargée d'éléments en suspension issus du lessivage des particules fines et de l'érosion souterraine dans les galeries de rongeurs. L'écoulement hypodermique est également plus lent que le ruissellement de surface. Il a pour effet de ralentir l'apparition des crues et d'en étaler les crêtes en allongeant l'échelle de temps. 3, record 11, French, - %C3%A9coulement%20hypodermique

Ce terme correspond aussi à d'autres concepts. Il a été utilisé à l'origine pour rendre compte de certaines phases du tarissement d'un cours d'eau en sortie de bassin versant après une pluie. Il a également été défini comme l'écoulement de la partie des précipitations infiltrées qui cheminerait d'abord quasi horizontalement dans les couches supérieures du terrain pour reparaître bientôt à l'air libre à la rencontre d'un microchenal, d'un talus ou, plus généralement, de la surface du sol à un niveau inférieur à celui de son point d'infiltration. De nombreux hydrologues estiment cependant que l'écoulement ainsi défini n'existe pas. Par contre, ils conçoivent un ruissellement en lame d'eau très mince, freiné par la végétation et les aspérités du sol, plus que ne l'est le ruissellement superficiel qui s'écoule en grosse concentration nettement caractérisée. Ces hydrologues utilisent, de préférence, le terme d'écoulement «retardé» qui est mieux adapté à leur définition du phénomène.
