ATOS is the least common form of TOS [thoracic outlet syndrome]... However, of the TOS subtypes, ATOS has the greatest potential for serious complications, and therefore surgical intervention is promptly warranted in patients demonstrating arterial compression. Thoracic outlet compression on the subclavian artery(SCA) can cause poststenotic dilation, leading to aneurysm formation, which can result in distal thromboembolism and further ischemic complications. Embolization to the arm or hand is common in patients with ATOS, usually causing discoloration of the affected upper extremity.... Patients can present in several ways, but all have in common an abnormality at the SCA usually combined with a bony abnormality.

A condition characterized by severe neuralgic pain originating in the distal end of the sole, usually beyond the necks of the third and the fourth metatarsal bones, and referred to the corresponding two toes. The pain is caused by the development of a neuroma in a digital nerve just proximal to its point of bifurcation. It occurs soon after walking on hard surfaces and is relieved by rest with the shoe removed.

A moderate effusion gives rise to a patellar tap. With the knee straight the suprapatellar pouch is emptied by pressure with one hand, and the parapatellar compartment by pressure with the other hand, leaving the index finger free to elicit the tap. With this finger the patella is pressed sharply against the femur. If there is sufficient fluid to "float" the patella off the femur it will be felt to tap against the femur.
