Space telerobotics is an inherently complex task, requiring mental visualization skills, fine motor visualization skills, fine motor control, and adhering to procedure and flight rules. Often space telerobotics is accomplished only using video views of the work area, so the robotic arm operator must interpret two dimensional images to create a 3D [three-dimensional] mental model of the environment and their position inside it, all the while being aware of arm kinematics and limitations, avoiding collisions, and following procedural flight rules. To add to the workload, they also control the arm in six degrees of freedom, using separate rotational and translational hand controls, where the movement axes are frequently not aligned with camera views (e.g., the operator views the scene backwards or upside down). 1, record 3, English, - space%20telerobotics

Pole vault is a field event in which an athlete jumps over an obstacle with the aid of a pole. Pole vaulting for height became a competitive sport in the mid-19th century. Originally, it was just a means of clearing objects. Pole lengths vary between 3. 05 m [meters] and 5. 30 m. The standard run up distance for pole vault is 40 m with a width of 1. 22 m. 2, record 15, French, - %C3%A0%20gradient%20d%27indice

SNOM is the acronym for "scanning near-field optical microscopy, "an alternative name for NSOM(near-field scanning optical microscopy). The basic principle of such a kind of technique is quite simple : light passes through a sub-wavelength diameter aperture and illuminates a sample that is placed within its near field, at a distance much less than the wavelength of the light. The resolution achieved is far better than that which conventional optical microscopes can attain. 4, record 21, English, - scanning%20near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscopy

Microscopists are now in a position to transfer the refinements of the past 100-year techniques for enhancing contrast and highlighting specific features, such as polarization contrast, immunofluorescence and phase contrast to scanning near-field optical microscopy. With existing scanned-probe microscopes we can "see" the nanometer realm of molecules and microcircuits. As the same technology is applied to optical microscopy, we may eventually come to see that world in the familiar terms of light, shadow and color. 6, record 21, English, - scanning%20near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscopy

Given the diversity of today's recording environments, controlling the room's contribution to the sound isn’t always easy. The solution : minimize the room's negative acoustic effects by placing the listener in the speaker's far field and the room's semi-reverberant field. This provides a high ratio of direct-to-reflected sound, while at the same time maintaining sufficient distance to allow the energy of the speaker's woofer and tweeter to combine acoustically. In this regime, carriers(electrons and holes) excited by absorbed photons are strongly accelerated in the strong internal electric field, so that they can generate secondary carriers, as it also occurs in photomultipliers. The avalanche process, which may take place over a distance of only a few micrometers, for example, effectively amplifies the photocurrent by a significant factor. Therefore, avalanche photodiodes can be used for very sensitive detectors, which need less electronic signal amplification and are thus less susceptible to electronic noise. 3, record 29, English, - avalanche%20photodiode

In evaluating the performance of an antenna as a radiating system one considers only the field at a large distance, where the induction field can be neglected. The antenna is then treated as an effective point source, radiating power that, per unit solid angle, is a function of direction only. The directive properties of an antenna are most conveniently expressed in terms of the "gain function"... The gain function is defined as the ratio of the power radiated in a given direction per unit solid angle to the average power radiated per unit solid angle... The maximum value of the gain function is called the "gain"... The gain of an antenna is the greatest factor by which the power transmitted in a given direction can be increased by using that antenna instead of an isotropic radiator. 2, record 35, English, - gain%20function

Theoretical Maximum Range... is the maximum [range] between two [avalanche] transceivers.... The maximum range can be established by using two transceivers of the same type with new batteries. Find a large flat area such as a football field and place one device on the ground in transmit mode. The other should be set to search mode on maximum gain and the antennas should be parallel. Move away from the device on the ground until the signal disappears. The distance obtained is usually the range indicated by the manufacturer and is usually around 80 meters for analogue devices and somewhat less for digital devices. 1, record 40, English, - theoretical%20maximum%20range

The Earth’s magnetic field presents an obstacle to the solar wind, as a rock in a running stream of water. This obstacle is called a bow shock. The bow shock slows down, heats, and compresses the solar wind, which then flows around the rest of Earth’s magnetic field. 3, record 53, English, - bow%20shock
Record number: 53, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The solar wind is ejected from the Sun at tremendous velocities, and as it approaches the Earth, its momentum compresses the outward extension of the geomagnetic field on the dayside of the Earth and greatly elongates it on the nightside to form the magnetosphere. At a certain distance "upstream" from Earth, the incoming solar wind flow is slowed and deflected by the dayside geomagnetic field, forming a supersonic shock wave located in front of the magnetosphere. This shock wave is known as the bow shock because of its similarity to the wave at the bow of a moving ship. 4, record 53, English, - bow%20shock

At present... the formation of urban land rent is no longer due to the presence of a large central town. On the contrary, the rents are now determined by the position with respect to areas destined for particular uses or to smaller urban areas. It is shown... that the distance from the nearest commercial and/or industrial area influences the selling price. In particular, for plots without buildings the highest values are in the immediate vicinity(Lit 8 148/m² at less than 2 km), while they gradually decrease as the distance increases, almost halving at distances of more than 6 km. The same can be said for distance from the nearest village. The plots furthest away cost almost Lit 18 million/haless than those in the immediate vicinity.... Vicinity to a dump has a greater effect than that of poor access. It is clear that being close to dumps almost totally eliminates the building suitability of the land, at least from an urban residential point of view. This allows the effect of the urban land rent on agricultural land in metropolitan areas to be estimated. If the value of a 2 ha plot of land, sited near an industrial or commercial area and with good access, is estimated with model C to be about Lit 77 million/ha, the value of a plot of the same size situated 9km away, near a dump and accessible by a dirt track or across the end of a field, would be about Lit 28 million/ha. 2, record 54, English, - urban%20land%20rent

When AC is applied to a coil, a varying magnetic field will be produced around it. When another coil is placed within that magnetic field, it will induce a current flowing in that coil. This principle is called MUTUAL INDUCTANCE The amount of mutual inductance between the two coils depends on the distance between the two coils, and the angle between the two coils. When two coils are linked together via mutual inductance in this manner, we say that the coils are inductively COUPLED. When the mutually inductive coils are close to each other, we say that they are closely, or tightly coupled. When they are far apart, we say that they are loosely coupled. The greatest amount of coupling occurs when the coils are wound one directly over the other and on a closed iron core. The quantity of coupling between two coils is sometimes referred to as the Coefficient of Coupling. 2, record 57, English, - mutual%20inductance

The Space Shuttle stops within 50 meters of Mir, which is approximately one-half the length of a football field. When the command is given to continue, the Reaction Control System is activated again and the Space Shuttle closes in on Mir at a speed of about 0. 05 meters per second until it reaches a distance of about 9 meters. There, the Space Shuttle stops again and waits for approximately 5 minutes. The Commander and Pilot make sure they can see the docking target clearly and fine-tune the alignment of the Space Shuttle with the docking target. A large black cross called the Stand-off Cross is mounted 30 centimeters(cm) above the back plate in the center of the target. Mirror depth can be measured by holding printed matter in front of a coin and increasing the distance between the two. If the printing is reflected in the field but is not clear at a distance of under one inch, the coin is semi-prooflike; if clearly reflected, that is readable, at a distance of one to four inches, the coin is prooflike and has a deep mirror; similarly at four to eight inches, it is very deep, and ultra deep beyond eight inches. 1, record 67, English, - mirror%20depth
