An acoustic survey is a method of gathering information on the abundance of a fish species using echo sounders. Sound is a form of energy which travels farther and faster underwater than in the air. So using the distance a sound travels and the record it makes when it bounces off of something underwater can tell a researcher a good deal about the creatures passing by underwater. 3, record 3, English, - hydroacoustic%20survey
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
In an acoustic survey, a transducer emits a pulse of sound. The transducer can be either fixed or mounted on a moving vessel. The sound moves through the water until it bumps into something, such as a fish, and part of its energy is reflected back to the transducer. Another device, called an echo sounder, amplifies the returned energy and sends it to a recorder where it registers as a mark. 3, record 3, English, - hydroacoustic%20survey

Double rainbows are fairly common.... the primary rainbow appears opposite the sun at an angular distance of about 42 degrees from the antisolar point. The primary bow is the result of a refraction as a ray of sunlight enters the drop, one internal reflection off the back of the drop, and a second refraction as the ray exits the drop. The geometry for the secondary bow is similar except that there are two internal reflections inside the drop. This geometry results in the appearance of the secondary rainbow at an angular distance of about 51 degrees, outside the primary bow. 2, record 6, English, - primary%20rainbow

A floating flame is an indication that there is a lack of secondary air to the flame. In severe cases, the flame will leave the burner and have the appearance of a floating cloud. Again, the intermediate products of combustion are apt to escape from place to place wherever sufficient air for combustion may be found. This flame is sometimes hard to detect because, as the door to the equipment is opened sufficient air will be admitted to allow the flame to rest on the burner properly. However, the obnoxious odor of aldehydes may still be detected. Another possible cause of this flame is an improperly operating vent system. If the products of combustion cannot escape, fresh air cannot reach the flame 1, record 16, English, - floating%20flame
Record number: 16, Textual support number: 2 CONT
When a flame raises off the burner it is important to determine if it is a "lifting flame" or a "floating flame" :"Lifting Flames" rise from the ports to burn some distance above the ports. In some cases these flames will drop back to the port and lift again intermittently. They are caused by too much primary air. Decreasing the shutter opening will stop lifting flames. "Floating Flames" are long and lazy looking, poorly defined, quiet flames which roll around the combustion chamber sometimes completely off the ports. Floating flames result from too little secondary or "make up" air. Lack of secondary air can be caused by incorrect venting, clogged flueways, blocked secondary air inlet openings, or lack of natural room makeup air to the oven. 2, record 16, English, - floating%20flame

Notch width is not the same as carapace width. Notch width is the distance across the carapace as measured from the notch just anterior to the 10th antero-lateral spine to the same notch on the other side. Carapace width includes the length of the spines and is measured from spine tip to spine tip across the widest portion of the shell. Notch width is the preferred measurement for scientific work because the spines tend to wear off as the shell ages. The same wear does not occur to the notch so notch width remains constant until the crab moults again.--Ivan Winther, DFO Science-Pacific Region. 3, record 18, English, - notch%20width

Three main systems of methane drainage have been developed :(1) the cross-measure borehole method which consists of boring holes from 2¼ to 3¼ inches in diameter and 150 to 300 feet in length, into the strata above or below the seam, generally close to the working face. This method has the advantage of being suited to a wide variety of conditions and does not require another seam within reasonable distance above or below the seam to be drained, or the use of solid stowing;(2) the superjacent roadway system in which boreholes are drilled from a roadway situated above the seam being worked, the drainage of the methane then taking place from this roadway; and(3) the pack cavity system in which corridors are left and supported in the goaf as the face advances, and from these firedamp is drawn off. 1, record 26, English, - methane%20drainage

Graded-index multimode fiber contains a core in which the refractive index diminishes gradually from the center axis out toward the cladding. The higher refractive index at the center makes the light rays moving down the axis advance more slowly than those near the cladding. Also, rather than zig-zagging off the cladding, light in the core curves helically because of the graded index, reducing its travel distance. The shortened path and the higher speed allow light at the periphery to arrive at a receiver at about the same time as the slow but straight rays in the core axis. The result : a digital pulse suffers less dispersion. These fibers often become the physical medium for local-area networks. 2, record 27, English, - graded%2Dindex%20multimode%20fiber

2, record 27, French, - fibre%20multimode%20%C3%A0%20gradient%20d%27indice

By the arithmetic slope of the indifference curve, we mean this : To find the slope of the curve at, say, point B, take a ruler and place it so that it is just tangent to the curve at B--it touches the curve, but does not cross it either above or below B. Mark the points at which the ruler's edge crosses the two axes. The slope is the ratio of the distance cut off on the vertical axis to the distance cut off on the horizontal axis. 1, record 36, English, - arithmetic%20slope%20of%20the%20indifference%20curve
