Integrally woven sandwich materials : By using distance woven fabrics as preforms, integral core-skin sandwich structures can be made. In principle this provides two advantages compared with general sandwich structrures. First, a cost efficient production of sandwich panels can be done. Second, the integral nature of the sandwich preform provides delamination resistant sandwich panels. 1, record 1, English, - woven%20sandwich%20material

SNOM is the acronym for "scanning near-field optical microscopy, "an alternative name for NSOM(near-field scanning optical microscopy). The basic principle of such a kind of technique is quite simple : light passes through a sub-wavelength diameter aperture and illuminates a sample that is placed within its near field, at a distance much less than the wavelength of the light. The resolution achieved is far better than that which conventional optical microscopes can attain. 4, record 4, English, - scanning%20near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscopy

Microscopists are now in a position to transfer the refinements of the past 100-year techniques for enhancing contrast and highlighting specific features, such as polarization contrast, immunofluorescence and phase contrast to scanning near-field optical microscopy. With existing scanned-probe microscopes we can "see" the nanometer realm of molecules and microcircuits. As the same technology is applied to optical microscopy, we may eventually come to see that world in the familiar terms of light, shadow and color. 6, record 4, English, - scanning%20near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscopy

Satellite navigation.... which has been developed over the last thirty years or so, essentially for military purposes originally, enables anyone with a receiver capable of picking up signals emitted by a constellation of satellites to instantly determine their position in time and space very accurately. The operating principle is simple : the satellites in the constellation are fitted with an atomic clock measuring time very accurately. The satellites emit personalised signals indicating the precise time the signal leaves the satellite. The ground receiver, incorporated for example into a mobile phone, has in its memory the precise details of the orbits of all the satellites in the constellation. By reading the incoming signal, it can thus recognise the particular satellite, determine the time taken by the signal to arrive and calculate the distance from the satellite. Once the ground receiver receives the signals from at least four satellites simultaneously, it can calculate the exact position. 2, record 6, English, - satellite%20navigation

Receiving hoods are positioned to catch contaminants that are discharged from an operation in a predictable direction. Examples of receiving hoods include canopies located over a hot process in which hot exhaust fumes rise to the hood level by their own buoyancy, and hoods located adjacent to grinding wheels to catch the stream of dust generated by the spinning wheel. Receiving hoods may physically resemble capture hoods, but they differ with respect to the principle used for contaminant capture. Capture hoods operate at a higher flow rate to generate the air velocities necessary to capture contaminants from a source some distance from the hood opening. Receiving hoods, on the other hand, are positioned to catch the stream of contaminants delivered to them by forces intrinsic to the operation. 1, record 7, English, - capture%20hood

When AC is applied to a coil, a varying magnetic field will be produced around it. When another coil is placed within that magnetic field, it will induce a current flowing in that coil. This principle is called MUTUAL INDUCTANCE The amount of mutual inductance between the two coils depends on the distance between the two coils, and the angle between the two coils. When two coils are linked together via mutual inductance in this manner, we say that the coils are inductively COUPLED. When the mutually inductive coils are close to each other, we say that they are closely, or tightly coupled. When they are far apart, we say that they are loosely coupled. The greatest amount of coupling occurs when the coils are wound one directly over the other and on a closed iron core. The quantity of coupling between two coils is sometimes referred to as the Coefficient of Coupling. 2, record 8, English, - mutual%20inductance

Hood designs can be placed into three broad categories based on the methods used to capture contaminants: exterior hoods, receiving hoods, and exhaust enclosures. 1, record 13, English, - receiving%20hood
Record number: 13, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Receiving hoods are positioned to catch contaminants that are discharged from an operation in a predictable direction. Examples of receiving hoods include canopies located over a hot process in which hot exhaust fumes rise to the hood level by their own buoyancy, and hoods located adjacent to grinding wheels to catch the stream of dust generated by the spinning wheel. 1, record 13, English, - receiving%20hood
Record number: 13, Textual support number: 3 CONT
Receiving hoods are designed to exhaust air at the same rate as the airflow created by the process by which the contaminants are generated. If the receiving hood is not sized properly, problems such as overloading and spillage will result. 1, record 13, English, - receiving%20hood

1, record 13, English, - receiving%20hood

Principle of operation of some automatic weapons, whereby the recoil energy imparted to the barrel is used to actuate the mechanism and perform the necessary cycle of operation. Two systems of recoil operation have been in use, as follows : a. Short recoil operation. The breechblock remains locked to the barrel only while the chamber pressure is high. This involves a barrel travel of only about 1/2 inch. The device locking the breechblock to the barrel is then released and the two components separate. The barrel may remain stationary and await the return of the breechblock, but in most modern designs the barrel has its own spring and goes forward into battery, e. g.. 50 calibre heavy machine-gun. b. Long recoil operation. The barrel and locked breech recoil a greater distance than the length of the cartridge. The breechblock is then held to the rear while the barrel is driven forward by its own spring. When the barrel is fully forward, it trips the catch releasing the breechblock, which then feeds the next cartridge into the chamber. Mainly encountered in semi-automatic shotguns. Fonctionnement par long recul.

South Pointing Carriage is the earliest known example of a land vehicle navigation system.... historical research has only recently established that [it] had nothing to do with magnetism, [but] was based on the principle(now called "the differential odometer") that for a given change in vehicle heading, a vehicle's outer wheels travel a mathematically predictable distance farther than the inner wheels. When changing heading, a gear train driven by an... outer wheel automatically engaged and rotated a horizontal turntable to exactly offset the change in heading... a figure with an outstretched arm mounted on the turntable always pointed in the original direction.... 1, record 15, English, - South%20Pointing%20Carriage
