An instrument combining a pulsed laser transmitter and optical receiver (usually a telescope) with an electronic signal processing unit used for the detection and ranging of various distant targets in the atmosphere, analogous to the principles of operation of microwave radar. 6, record 34, English, - lidar
Record number: 34, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The lidar technique operates on the same principle as radar; in fact, it is sometimes called laser radar. The principal difference between lidar and radar is the wavelength of the radiation used. Radar uses wavelengths in the radio band whereas lidar uses light, that is usually generated by lasers in modern lidar systems. 7, record 34, English, - lidar
Record number: 34, Textual support number: 2 CONT
There are three basic generic types of lidar :range finders, DIAL, and Doppler lidars. Rande finder lidars are the simplest lidars. They are used to measure the distance from the lidar instrument to a solid or hard target Differential Absorption Lidar(DIAL) is used to measure chemical concentrations(such as ozone, water vapor, pollutants) in the atmosphere. Doppler lidar is used to measure the velocity of a target High-resolution DEMs with vertical accuracy as good as 10 cm can be created with Lidar. Lidar is also better able to map bare earth elevations in forested or vegetated areas than other methods because only a single laser pulse needs to be able to reach between trees and the ground. 8, record 34, English, - lidar

... a spectroscope or spectrograph... are effectively the same thing except that a spectroscope is simply used for visual inspection(that is, your eye is the detector), while a spectrograph includes some means(photographic film or an electronic detector) for recording the spectrum for analysis. In professional astronomy these days there is very little need for a spectroscope... a spectrograph in its simplest form,... is a light-tight box with a small(often narrow rectangular or adjustable) opening to let light in, a grating to break the light into its components, and a "detector" of some kind placed at the proper angle and distance from the grating to record the spectrum of the wavelength range of interest. Telescopes are used to gather the faint light from distant objects, and the spectrographs are placed at the focus of the telescope to analyze the light. 2, record 36, English, - spectrograph

2, record 46, French, - radar%20imageur%20%C3%A0%20synth%C3%A8se%20d%27ouverture

Antenna pattern correction. The brightness of the image is affected by the antenna gain variation where the near range will receive maximum power while the far range will receive minimum power. This effect produces an image that varies in intensity(tone) along the range direction across the image. The antenna pattern effect is expressed as the energy returned to the radar and decreases dramatically as the range distance increases. Antenna pattern correction is applied to produce a uniform average brightness across the imaged swath. 3, record 50, English, - antenna%20pattern%20correction

Atmospheric visibility is basically a measure of how clear the air is. The spatial resolution of a RADAR image is controlled by the size of the pulse on the ground, which is a function of the range resolution and azimuth resolution... The actual distance on the ground resolved is that between the leading and trailing edge of the pulse. Steeper depression angles and longer pulse lengths lead to a decrease in range resolution. Longer pulses result in an echo from over a larger area on the ground, and hence objects close together are not resolved. 2, record 65, English, - steeper%20depression%20angle

Under contract from the Canadian Space Agency(CSA), the Canadian company, Kinetic Sciences Inc.(KSI), developed a proximity sensor that can provide both image features and range data very near to the surface of the sensor. Because the sensor works without using conventional lenses, it reduces the potential for distorting the image... An important need in many robotics systems is to obtain proximity measurements-which establish how close one object is to another-of the features of an object as it is approached at a close range by the finger tips or robot rippers’. In this situation normal visual sensing tends to be obscured, and can prevent the robot from properly grasping objects or completing tasks. What was required and developed by KSI was a ear-touch proximity sensor that could provide detailed information on the distance and orientation of one object with respect to another for objects between 1 centimetre and 1 millimetre away from the finger tip of the robot. 2, record 66, English, - proximity%20sensor

A radio spectrometer has been built on Bruny Island, south of Hobart, for the study of solar bursts in the rarely observed frequency range from 3 to 20 MHz. This spectrometer is an adaptive device that employs digital techniques to avoid most of the strong terrestrial interference prevalent in this frequency range. The residual interference that cannot be avoided is excised during off-line processing. As a result, successful observations are made down to the minimum frequency that can propagate through the ionosphere to the antenna. This minimum frequency depends upon the zenith distance of the Sun and it is usually between 4 and 8 MHz. 2, record 67, English, - radio%20spectrometer

In a long synthetic aperture (array), SAR focusing involves the removal and compensation of path length differences from the antenna to the target on the ground. 2, record 69, English, - SAR%20focusing
Record number: 69, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The main advantage of a focused synthetic aperture is that it increases its array length over those radar signals that can be processed, and thus increases potential SAR resolution at any range. SAR focusing is a necessary process when the length of a synthetic array is a significant fraction of the range to ground being imaged, as the lines-of-sight(range) from a particular point on the ground to each individual element of the array differ in distance. These range differences, or path length differences, of the radar signals can affect image quality. In a focused SAR image these phase errors can be compensated for by applying a phase correction to the return signal at each synthetic aperture element. Focusing errors may be introduced by unknown or uncorrected platform motion. In an unfocused SAR image, the usable synthetic aperture length is quite limited. 2, record 69, English, - SAR%20focusing

Correction Lines.... the meridians are converging lines that meet at the poles. Like the meridians, the range lines also converge as the run north from the 49th parallel. As a result, the top or northern border of any town ship must measure slightly less in distance than its base or southern border.... This, of course, was a situation that the surveyors wanted to avoid, since the whole intent of the grid system was to create parcels of land of approximately the same size. To reduce distortion caused by the converging range lines, the surveyors used the following method. The second township line north of the 49th parallel and every fourth township line thereafter were established as correction line. At each correction line, the range line is displaced a certain distance. This jog, as it is called, in effect increases the area of the townships north of each correction line, thereby compensating somewhat for the convergence. The jogs in the range lines west of any meridian are accumulative. That is, if you follow a correction line west from any meridian, you will find that the jogs you first encounter are very small. The jogs increase as you move west from range line to range line. 3, record 73, English, - Correction%20Line

1, record 85, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20d%27affichage%20%C3%A9lectronique%20%C3%A0%20grossissement%20optique

The British device is described officially as a Laser True Airspeed System(LATAS) ;it might be more accurate to call it a "potential" or "future" airspeed measuring system, since its function is to advise the pilot what his airspeed will be when he traverses a zone located a short distance ahead of his current position at any given moment. Normally this distance is in the 500-600 m range, far enough ahead at normal approach speeds of 360-450 km/h(200-250kn) to give the pilot some four to six seconds warning to recognize an impending change in true airspeed [due to turbulence] and to take any necessary corrective action. 1, record 86, English, - Laser%20True%20Airspeed%20System

1, record 86, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20laser%20de%20mesure%20de%20la%20vitesse%20propre

There are about 45 known comets whose orbits are inclined at less than 45 ° to the ecliptic, that travel from west to east(like the planets), and whose aphelion distances are near Jupiter's mean distance from the sun. They comprise "Jupiter's family of comets". They have periods that range from 5 to 10 years. They are believed to be comets whose orbits were originally very long(like those of most comets) but were changed into relatively small orbits as a result of perturbations that occurred when the comets passed close to Jupiter. 1, record 88, English, - Jupiter%26rsquo%3Bs%20family%20of%20comets
