The near-field microscope is an advanced optical microscope that is able to resolve details slightly smaller than the wavelength of visible light. This high resolution is achieved by passing a light beam through a tiny hole at a distance from the specimen of only about half the diameter of the hole. The light is played across the specimen until an entire image is obtained.

Un microscope à sonde locale ne possède pas de lentille; la pièce la plus importante de ces microscopes est une sonde, très fine, qui est déplacée au voisinage de l'objet, en champ proche, pour l'éclairer ou encapter un signal. Ces microscopes sont des microscopes à balayage; l'image est obtenue en déplaçant point par point la sonde et en traçant le signal détecté en fonction de sa position. SNOM is the acronym for "scanning near-field optical microscopy, "an alternative name for NSOM(near-field scanning optical microscopy). The basic principle of such a kind of technique is quite simple : light passes through a sub-wavelength diameter aperture and illuminates a sample that is placed within its near field, at a distance much less than the wavelength of the light. The resolution achieved is far better than that which conventional optical microscopes can attain.

Microscopists are now in a position to transfer the refinements of the past 100-year techniques for enhancing contrast and highlighting specific features, such as polarization contrast, immunofluorescence and phase contrast to scanning near-field optical microscopy. With existing scanned-probe microscopes we can "see" the nanometer realm of molecules and microcircuits. As the same technology is applied to optical microscopy, we may eventually come to see that world in the familiar terms of light, shadow and color.

L'équipe [...] a réussi à visualiser ce phénomène biologique en recourant à la microscopie optique à balayage à champ proche (NSOM). Cette technologie d'imagerie éclaire la cellule en canalisant la lumière dans une sonde à fibre optique plus petite qu'un micron. La minuscule ouverture de la sonde (guère plus de 50 nanomètres de diamètre) interdit la diffraction des rayons lumineux qui réduit normalement la résolution en microscopie classique.

In an effort to improve the resolution of the 8q24 map, we have undertaken radiation hybrid(RH) mapping. This method compliments the existing mapping strategies of meiotic mapping(Gyapay et al., 1994) and somatic cell hybrid panels(Wagner et al., 1991; Parrish et al., 1994), but at a higher resolution and with particular emphasis on defining the order and intermarker distance of loci in regions of interest.

Since the first commercial high resolution satellite was launched in late 1999, the potential of metric accuracy has been widely demonstrated. The spatial resolution of a RADAR image is controlled by the size of the pulse on the ground, which is a function of the range resolution and azimuth resolution... The actual distance on the ground resolved is that between the leading and trailing edge of the pulse. Steeper depression angles and longer pulse lengths lead to a decrease in range resolution. Longer pulses result in an echo from over a larger area on the ground, and hence objects close together are not resolved.

In a long synthetic aperture (array), SAR focusing involves the removal and compensation of path length differences from the antenna to the target on the ground.

CONT

The main advantage of a focused synthetic aperture is that it increases its array length over those radar signals that can be processed, and thus increases potential SAR resolution at any range. SAR focusing is a necessary process when the length of a synthetic array is a significant fraction of the range to ground being imaged, as the lines-of-sight(range) from a particular point on the ground to each individual element of the array differ in distance. These range differences, or path length differences, of the radar signals can affect image quality. In a focused SAR image these phase errors can be compensated for by applying a phase correction to the return signal at each synthetic aperture element. Focusing errors may be introduced by unknown or uncorrected platform motion. In an unfocused SAR image, the usable synthetic aperture length is quite limited.
