A circular disc fixed on a revolving shaft, some distance out of centre, working freely in a ring(the eccentric strap), which is attached to a rod called an eccentric rod, by means of which the rotating motion of the shaft is converted into a backward-and-forward motion. 2, record 1, English, - eccentric
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Because an eccentric can be attached anywhere along a shaft it is unnecessary to form any part of the shaft into a crank. Eccentrics are seldom used to transmit large forces because friction loss would be high; they are commonly used to drive the valve gears of engines. 3, record 1, English, - eccentric

Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 CONT
It is most apparent when the sun is low in the sky and when the surface is dew-covered. The explanation of the heiligenschein varies depending upon whether it is seen over a dry or a dew-covered surface. When an observer’s shadow is cast on a dry, irregular surface (such as gravel or vegetation), each irregularity near the antisolar point covers its own shadow. In other directions, the average brightness results from a mixture of sunlit and shaded surfaces. The lower the sun in the sky, the longer the shadows and so the greater the contrast with the brighter region near the antisolar point. 4, record 6, English, - Heiligenschein
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The heiligenschein is occasionally called Cellini’s halo, after Benvenuto Cellini who described its behavior in his memoirs of 1562. He even pointed out that it appears to the greatest advantage when the grass is moist with dew, but felt its appearance bespoke the wondrous ways of Gods providence toward me. Shades of this interpretation are also found in the name heiligenschein: It is German for the light of the holy one. 4, record 6, English, - Heiligenschein

The Space Shuttle stops within 50 meters of Mir, which is approximately one-half the length of a football field. From that position the Space Shuttle waits for clearance from Mission Control to continue. When the command is given to continue, the Reaction Control System is activated again and the Space Shuttle closes in on Mir at a speed of about 0. 05 meters per second until it reaches a distance of about 9 meters. There, the Space Shuttle stops again and waits for approximately 5 minutes. The Commander and Pilot make sure they can see the docking target clearly and fine-tune the alignment of the Space Shuttle with the docking target. A large black cross called the Stand-off Cross is mounted 30 centimeters(cm) above the back plate in the center of the target. When the Commander has the Stand-off Cross squarely in line with the docking target, he or she maneuvers the Space Shuttle and makes contact with the docking ring. Once a series of hooks is engaged, the Space Shuttle is then successfully docked with Mir. 2, record 7, English, - docking%20target

... the ring laser gyro concept is based on the principles of general relativity, which predict that the distance around a closed optical path in a rotating frame of reference depends on the direction the path is traversed. A beam of light traveling around the path in the direction of rotation will have to travel farther than one traveling in the opposite direction of rotation, and the pathlength difference can be used as a measure of angular rotation. 2, record 8, English, - optical%20path

A more advanced type of gyro is the optical gyroscope. These devices are based on two counter-rotating beams of light travelling in a ring-like structure. The interaction of the two light beams produces a standing wave pattern. If the ring is then rotated about its centre axis(think of a torus spinning around its core), one of the beams has to travel a slightly longer distance, and the other a slightly shorter distance to get back to where they started. This will cause a shift in the pattern of the standing wave, and this can be measured to determine the rate of rotation. 3, record 9, English, - optical%20gyro

Most people would remember the classic rotating disc gyroscope, which belongs to the mechanical group. One of today’s high precision gyros is still the mechanical, rotating gyro; however it is dependent on linear accelerations because of its mechanical measuring principle. The optical group comprises the fibre optic- and laser types. These use the Sagnac Effect (named after its French discoverer), which, when the sensor is turned, results in a difference in transit time between two light waves passing through the same optical path but in opposite directions. Optical gyros therefore do not depend on acceleration as gyros in the mechanical group. This is one of their biggest advantages ... 4, record 9, English, - optical%20gyro

2, record 9, French, - gyroscope%20optique
