DISTANCE STEP [11 records]

Record 1 2016-06-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Tolerances and Modular Co-ordination (Construction)
  • Stairs and Stairways
DEF

The horizontal distance from front to back of the upper surface of a step in a stair, including the run and the nosing.

OBS

tread width: confusing term that can be viewed as meaning the horizontal dimension from side to side of the upper surface of a step in a stair.

OBS

tread width: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Calcul, tolérances et modulation (Construction)
  • Escaliers
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Surveying Instruments
  • Mathematical Geography
  • Scientific Instruments
DEF

An instrument, usually in watch form, that records the distance a walker covers by responding to his body motion at each step.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments d'arpentage
  • Géographie mathématique
  • Instruments scientifiques
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematical Geography
  • Technical Surveys
CONT

Planimetric control. Segmentation is sometimes a ground step for correlation which approximates regions by plans, thus we have studied a way to control in 2D the planimetric differences between a reference and a segmentation outline. Various distances have been used for this purpose : Haussdorf distance from segmentation boundaries to reference ones seem to be the most appropriate. A recovering surface quality estimator has been tried and we have computed the ratio between intersection and union with respect to the both areas. This method will be used on many test sites.

Domaine(s)
  • Géographie mathématique
  • Levés et relevés techniques (Arpentage)
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Fencing
OBS

A fencer uses the retreat or the step back to avoid being hit, to maintain distance.

French

Domaine(s)

English

Subject field(s)
  • Track and Field
OBS

The "Step" (...) the "step" begins with the contact foot flat on the runway, the free leg behind and driving forward, and the arms in the normal opposition position.

OBS

Stride : a long step or the distance covered by a long step.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Athlétisme
OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Statistics
CONT

Since a notion of closeness demands a measure of distance among preference structures, this paper takes the first step of studying various distance measures over fully and partially specified preference structures. We explore the use of Euclidean distance, Spearman's footrule, and define a new measure, the probabilistic distance.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie analytique
DEF

Video produced in 1986 by the National Film Board. Part of The Next Step, a series of three films that examines the services needed by and those available to battered women. Moving On looks at the problem of wife assault in London, Ontario where a coordinated effort by women's groups, transition house staff, social services agencies, police, lawyers and doctors have resulted in effective and innovative programs. The London Battered Women's Advocacy Clinic and Changing Ways, a therapy program for men who batter, are also part of the city's effort to break the cycle of violence.(A Safe Distance and Sylvie's Story are the other films in this series.)

English

Subject field(s)
  • Television (Radioelectricity)
DEF

The condition where the three beams of a color picture tube come together at the aperture mask as they are deflected both vertically and horizontally.

CONT

To maintain this converged condition of the beams as they swing away from the center, it is also necessary to vary their relative angles slightly. This process of changing the beam angle so that it will be in step with the scanning is referred to as dynamic convergence. It is required because the distance traveled by the beams increases as they swing away from the center of the screen.
