... the twinkle [of stars], sometimes called astronomical scintillation, is caused by motions in the atmosphere.... Scintillation is caused by air parcels of different densities moving through the line of sight, thereby causing varying refraction of light coming from distant objects. You can see this phenomenon when looking over the top of a car, parked in the sun, toward an object at a distance; in winter, looking over a heated radiator out through the window will show the shimmering of objects.

L'air près du sol reçoit cette chaleur et s'élève à la rencontre de l'air plus froid. L'air chaud et l'air froid se mélangent, créant ainsi de la turbulence. [...] Le scintillement des étoiles se manifeste de deux façons. D'abord, l'éclat de l'étoile change rapidement. Puis, la couleur de l'étoile varie, vacillant d'une couleur de l'arc-en-ciel à l'autre.
