CONT

The product environmental footprint [is] a new and improved method on how companies should measure the environmental performance of any product throughout its [life cycle](taking into account all the upstream supply chain and downstream activities). The PEF is based on the scientific method for measuring environmental footprints called [life cycle assessments].

DEF

Refining and marketing (oil company).

CONT

The Petroleum Utilization Branch monitors the operational and economic performance of the downstream sector of the industry and advises on policy to ensure efficient utilization of domestic and imported petroleum resources.

CONT

Husky has an extensive downstream business as a leading Western Canadian producer and marketer of fuel and asphalt. Our operations are also composed of an extensive retail network.

CONT

.. the petrochemical industry supplies essential materials and key technology to closely related downstream industries which employ an excess of 125,000 workers.

OBS

downstream operations: as opposed to "upstream operations."

DEF

OBS

secteur aval : Par opposition à «secteur amont».

DEF

Fine, meshed material suspended in the water to prevent silt escaping from a construction site.

CONT

Soil Retention Tests. One variation of this test is directed toward the use of geotextiles as underwater silt curtains. The test device consists of two rectangular tanks which are placed end to end with slide gates facing one another. Between these two slide gates is the fabric specimen under test. The upstream tank(with the slide gate closed) is now filled with water that has a known amount of silt uniformly mixed in it. The gate valve at the exit end of the downstream tank is opened. The test begins by lifting up the slide gates on each side of the fabric and allowing the(turbid) water to pass through the fabric, which is acting as a submerged soil filter... This test... is aimed at the reduction in turbidity of rivers and streams during adjacent construction activities.

CONT

CONT

Geotextile Silt Fences. Silt fences consist of fabrics placed vertically on posts to prevent sediment carrying sheet runoff from entering into downstream creeks or sewer systems. Since all construction activities must have an associated sedimentation and erosion control plan, this concept is rapidly growing and replacing bales of straw, hay, and other makeshift methods. The bottom of the silt fence is generally embedded in an anchoring ditch; the posts, to which the fabric is attached, are usually at 5-to 10-ft spacings; and sometimes a wire fencing is required as backing on the fabric to provide additional support.

CONT

Erosion control applications [of geotextiles] include trench drains, silt fences, and reverse filters such as used in embankment protection and surface erosion control.
