DOWNSTREAM EFFECT [7 records]

Record 1 2011-01-11

Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
DEF

Device enabling a larger surface area to be obtained without making large and unwieldy stacks of flat membrane. One only has to mould the membrane into a tube and then incorporate a number of such membrane tubes into a cartridge; liquid can then be recirculated through the cartridge and sufficient pressure for ultra-filtration obtained by restricting the flow downstream of the cartridge. In some systems the membrane may be moulded round a plastic rod which is grooved to produce a thin channel effect; it has been suggested that this is more efficient in reducing concentration polarization than a hollow membrane tube. The cartridge system has been used in various large-scale units with membrane areas of up to several square feet.

OBS

Molecular weight cut-off range from 500 to 300,000.

CONT

CONT

The meander belt channels also had an effect on the lower portion of the watershed by increasing flood magnitudes and the transport of sediment downstream, thereby shifting the locus of sedimentation from the tributaries to the larger, lower valleys.

CONT

The distribution of salt within Scotian Basin suggests that the major grabens were loci of early deposition accumulating thick sequences of evaporites and associated redbeds which thinned across intervening highs.

OBS

The plural form of locus is loci.

Downstream of Quebec City, between Île d’Orléans and Île aux Coudres, the tide effect and the encounter of fresh and briny water contribute to formation of a maximum turbidity zone where mean concentrations range from 25 to 70 mg/L, easily rising to 200 and even 400 mg/L.

CONT
