DEF

A process by which water bodies show a flat and level water surface in a topographic model.

CONT

Hydro-flattening is the process of creating a lidar [light detection and ranging]-derived DEM [digital elevation model] in which water surfaces appear and behave as they would in traditional topographic DEMs created from photogrammetric digital terrain models (DTMs).

OBS

[A] digital elevation model(DEM) or triangulated irregular network(TIN) derived from LiDAR [light detection and ranging] data will show unpleasant and unnatural water surface due to the fact that LiDAR data does not provide natural breaklines and the elevations of water points is not uniform. Furthermore, hydrologic connectivity in water surfaces is necessary to ensure that the elevation of water surface decreases from upstream(U/S) to downstream(D/S). Therefore, the LiDAR data is hydro-flattened so that water bodies such as streams, rivers, and long reservoirs show an elevation change along their length, whereas ponds, lakes, or other cartographically polygonal water surfaces show a static water surface, consistent with their natural behavior and the surrounding topography...

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wind Energy
CONT

Actuator disk theory. The simplest model of a horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT) is one in which the turbine rotor is replaced by an actuator disk which removes energy from the wind. As the wind strikes the actuator disk on the upwind side, the pressure rises there, and the wind is deflected away from the disk, causing a large wake downstream of the disk. Actuator disk theory relates the pressure drop across the disk to the change in wake size and the energy which can be extracted from the wind.

DEF

A vortex wake model used to assess the performance of horizontal axis wind turbines by partitioning the flow field downstream of the rotor into three regions.

CONT

Success of vortex theories in the performance analysis of horizontal axis wind turbines depends greatly upon accurate specification of the geometry of the vortex wake... An earlier wake model of helicopter rotors is extended for wind turbine applications, the fast free wake method(FFW). The FFW was accomplished by partitioning the flow field downstream of the rotor into three regions :(1) the near wake, modeled as a series of straight vortex lines;(2) the intermediate wake, modeled as a number of vortex rings; and(3) the far wake, taken to be a semi-infinite cylindrical wake.

CONT

To estimate pollutant concentration in a river downstream from a spill, the turbulent diffusion has been modelled.... The one-dimensional model uses an idealized rectangular channel section and assumes a uniform concentration of the pollutant throughout the section. Obviously, this applies only to points sufficiently far downstream of the spill where mixing and dilution have distributed the pollutant across the entire river channel.
