English

Subject field(s)
  • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Physics)
  • Motor Vehicles and Bicycles
DEF

A series of vortices which are systematically shed from the downstream side of a body around which fluid is flowing rapidly.

CONT

Vortex streets can be created by steady winds blowing past smokestacks, transmission lines, bridges, missiles about to be launched vertically, and pipelines aboveground in the desert ... If the vortex shedding frequency is near a natural vibration frequency of the body, the resonant response may cause structural damage.

OBS

... the vortices formed by the rolling up of the two surfaces of discontinuity in the make arrange themselves into two equispaced parallel rows, forming an "avenue" or "street" in which the one set lies intermediate in station to the other. Von Karman showed that the system will continue in stable formation as it marches downstream.

Subject field(s)
  • Wind Energy
CONT

Actuator disk theory. The simplest model of a horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT) is one in which the turbine rotor is replaced by an actuator disk which removes energy from the wind. As the wind strikes the actuator disk on the upwind side, the pressure rises there, and the wind is deflected away from the disk, causing a large wake downstream of the disk. Actuator disk theory relates the pressure drop across the disk to the change in wake size and the energy which can be extracted from the wind.

Around-the-pump proportioner : This type of proportioner also operates on the venturi principle [as does the "in-line inductor"], except that it must be situated at the pump and connected to both suction and pressure sides. Its advantage is that pressure recovery of the venturi action is attained, and pump delivery pressures to the foam-making device or devices downstream require no compensation for pressure loss except for that in the layout hose length.... A small portion of the pump discharge flows through a bypass line to the suction side of the pump. DEF

The side protected from blowing wind, advancing waves, water currents, or flowing ice, as the downstream side of glaciated rocks which is generally indicated by roughened and steeper surfaces.

CONT

This geologist is standing on a small rock knob in the till plain at Scarpa Lake. The gneissic outcrop is rounded and abraded on the up-glacier side (to the left of the geologist), and has had blocks plucked from it on the down-ice side (to the right of the geologist).

CONT

An elongated, rounded, asymmetrical, bedrock knob can be produced by glacier erosion. It has a gentle slope on its up-glacier side and a steep to vertical face on the down-glacier side. The glacier abrades the smooth slope that it flows along, while rock is torn loose from the downstream side and carried away in ice, a process known as "plucking".

OBS

DEF

A type of liquid foam concentrate proportioning device that feeds the concentrate into the water at the output side of the pump rather than through the pump.

CONT

Balanced-pressure proportioners and around-the-pump proportioners are both systems that are built into the apparatus fire pump. ... The around-the-pump proportioning system consists of a pickup line on the discharge side of the pump back to the intake side of the pump. An in-line eductor is positioned on this pump bypass. These units are rated for a specific flow and should be used at this rate, although they do have some flexibility. For example, a unit designed to flow 500 gpm (2,000 L/min) at a 6 percent concentration will flow 1,000 gpm (4,000 L/min) at a 3 percent rate.

CONT

Around-the-pump proportioner : This type of proportioner also operates on the venturi principle [as does the "in-line inductor"], except that it must be situated at the pump and connected to both suction and pressure sides. The test device consists of two rectangular tanks which are placed end to end with slide gates facing one another. Between these two slide gates is the fabric specimen under test. The upstream tank(with the slide gate closed) is now filled with water that has a known amount of silt uniformly mixed in it. The gate valve at the exit end of the downstream tank is opened. CONT

Normally a granular drainage blanket is provided over the area treated with vertical drains in order to facilitate the dissipation of porewater at ground surface level. As the underlying compressible soil is usually unable to directly support construction plant, the drainage blanket should also function as a foundation platform for the construction plant. It has been suggested ... that since the thinnest layer of sand to act successfully as an erosion pumping filter was 25 mm, and the slurry penetrated /3mm in this case, then a geotextile with a thickness of 10 mm or more might successfully replace the sand blanket layer. The fact that the most successful sand blanket have voids ranging from 5 to 30 [micrometers] seems to suggest that the geotextile’s voids should be of a similar magnitude. Erosion pumping filters, using a geotextile in conjunction with a sand blanket, are much more effective than geotextiles alone.
