Complete Fabric Retaining Walls. A fabric retaining wall consists of horizontal layers of fabric-containing earth fill with one side of the fabric folded back around the exposed edge and lapped over the next layer to form the wall face ... . At the face of the wall the fabric retains the soil from spilling out, while in the interior of the fill fabric tensile stress is developed, which stabilizes the mass.

Fabric Earth dams. While this application is similar in concept and construction method to fabric retaining walls, the hydrostatic pressure of the retained water and the potential scour problem make the application somewhat unique. Kern describes an application of this type in France where a fabric wall with a vertical downstream face was constructed... the upstream slope is 2 : 1. The fabric used was a woven polyester filled with a loam soil.

Soutènements. Talus renforcés [...] Mise en œuvre du matériau d'apport : le matériau d'apport doit être mis en œuvre par couches, d'épaisseur adaptée à l'entraxe des nappes géotextiles [...] Chaque couche devra être soigneusement compactée afin de limiter au minimum les déformations du massif. L'exécution classique d'un talus renforcé par des géotextiles exige l'utilisation d'un coffrage mobile que l'on déplace au fur et à mesure de d'édification de l'ouvrage.

Même si l'expérience montre que, dans la majorité des cas, les ouvrages classiques comportant des géotextiles (voies de circulation, tranchées drainantes, protection de berges, etc.) se comportent bien, il est d'autres constructions qui exigent une surveillance plus étroite, en raison d'une plus grande sollicitation mécanique ou hydraulique du géotextile (ouvrages de soutènement, drain-cheminée dans les digues, etc.).

logrolling: A sport in which a person tries to retain his balance while standing on and rotating a floating log with his feet and while trying at the same time to dislodge usually a single competitor on the same log.

Birling seems the art of standing on a floating log while logrolling is a general term for the sports involving birling. (See source SPORE-E, 1986, vol. 21, p. 32). But sources disagree as to which is which; this gives weight to the near synonymy of both terms.

There are various types of logrolling sports. 1. Two contestants stand on the ends of a large floating log and try to dislodge each other by spinning the log with their feet. This is called "birling". 2. Others include racing downstream on logs, using a pole to steer around obstacles. 3. In another kind of logrolling, contestants use a "peevee"(a tool with a wooden handle and a flexible hook) to roll a log up a slope.

Les épreuves varient : 1. Au cours des compétitions d'équilibre, 2 concurrents sont debout à chaque extrémité d'une bille de bois et tentent de déstabiliser l'adversaire en faisant tourner sur lui-même le tronc d'arbre à l'aide de leurs pieds. 2. Les concurrents peuvent aussi se mesurer à la descente de rivière sur des billots. 3. Un autre sport de bûcheron consiste à utiliser un "tourne-billes" muni d'un manche en bois et d'un crochet souple, pour faire rouler des billots vers le haut d'une pente.

The side protected from blowing wind, advancing waves, water currents, or flowing ice, as the downstream side of glaciated rocks which is generally indicated by roughened and steeper surfaces.

This geologist is standing on a small rock knob in the till plain at Scarpa Lake. The gneissic outcrop is rounded and abraded on the up-glacier side (to the left of the geologist), and has had blocks plucked from it on the down-ice side (to the right of the geologist).

An elongated, rounded, asymmetrical, bedrock knob can be produced by glacier erosion. It has a gentle slope on its up-glacier side and a steep to vertical face on the down-glacier side. The glacier abrades the smooth slope that it flows along, while rock is torn loose from the downstream side and carried away in ice, a process known as "plucking".

The stoss, or up-ice, side of a drumlin is generally steeper and blunter than the lee, or down-ice side, which is more gently sloped and tapered.

Cette forme de terrain est due aux eaux de fonte d'un glacier, qui accumulent des sédiments entre la glace et le versant d'une vallée. D'un côté, les sédiments s'appuient donc sur un rebord rocheux et, de l'autre, reposent contre la glace. Quand cette dernière fond, l'ensemble du dépôt se borde peu à peu d'un talus plus ou moins raide situé du côté occupé auparavant par la glace. Une telle construction, comprenant une surface relativement plane terminée par un talus en pente forte, se nomme une terrasse. Dans ce cas-ci, étant donné l'origine de contact glaciaire, il s'agit d'une terrasse de kame.
