A ski bowl is an open expanse of an area that appears like a bowl-shaped depression off the side of a mountain. This configuration is made out of a broad, dish-like formation that extends all the way down to the foot of the mountain. Its gentle and sometimes steep sloping shape allows the skier to choose many paths or pistes when gliding down the slope. 2, record 4, English, - bowl
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The wind is a very important modifier of snow conditions. Areas with deposition of drifted snow should be assessed very carefully : the downwind sides of ridges, hills, and ribs, and local depressions on a steep slope, "caps" of gullies, and notches. Bowls, cirques, and wide depressions have complex wind action patterns that increase the uncertainty when predicting snow stability. 3, record 4, English, - bowl

Normal thermal stratification of a pond, if it is to occur, generally begins in May or early June and ends in September or early October. Ponds can stratify because water attains maximum density at 39°F. It becomes less dense(lighter in weight) both above and below 39°F. Soon after the ice melts in the early spring, the water temperature throughout the pond rises to 32°F. Winds blowing across the pond's surface cause the water to pile up on the downwind side. The water moves downward, across the pond bottom, to the upwind side. The entire pond begins to circulate from top to bottom, maintaining a uniform temperature. As long as winds are strong enough, the pond temperature will remain uniform, even as the pond begins to warm during spring. This is a period known as "spring overturn. " 5, record 26, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 26, Textual support number: 2 CONT
When surface water reaches 39 degrees in spring, it becomes heavier than the water immediately below it and therefore sinks. The downward movement of surface water forces water in the deeper parts of the lake upward. The resulting circulation of water is called spring turnover. Spring winds also help promote water circulation. 2, record 26, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 26, Textual support number: 1 OBS
turnover: A phenomenon usually occurring in spring and fall because of the increase in density of water above and below the temperature of minimum density. In the spring, as the surface of the water warms above the freezing point, the water increases in density, becomes heavier, and tends to sink, producing vertical currents, while in the fall, as the surface water becomes colder and therefore heavier, it also tends to sink. Also see overturning. 6, record 26, English, - spring%20overturn

5, record 38, French, - %C3%A9olienne%20aval

... a soil/duff drought index [developed by Keetch and Byram (1968]) that ranges from 0 (no drought) to 800 (extreme drought) and is based on soil capacity of 8 inches of water. Factors in the index are maximum daily temperature, daily precipitation, antecedent precipitation, and annual precipitation. 4, record 49, English, - Keetch%2DByram%20drought%20index
Record number: 49, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The Keetch Byram Drought Index (KBDI) provides a daily measure of soil dryness, which, in turn, gives an indication of water stress in plants. The KBDI represents the net effect of precipitation and evapotranspiration in producing cumulative moisture deficiency in deep duff or upper soil layers. The KBDI has a range from 0 (no drought or soil moisture deficiency, i.e. soil at field capacity) to 2000 (extreme drought, maximum soil moisture deficiency possible). The index can be viewed as the amount of rain needed to bring the soil back to saturation, with one mm of rain reducing the index by 10 points. The 0-2000 point scale is divided into three drought classes: 0-999 = Low; 1000-1499 = Moderate; 1500 - 2000 = High. The KBDI is simple to calculate as it uses only two, daily weather observations - maximum temperature and 24-hour rainfall. The system functions in a book-keeping fashion where estimates of daily evapo-transpiration and measurements of precipitation increase or decrease the value of yesterdays index. The KBDI by itself is not a Fire Danger Rating System as it gives no indicate of the ease of ignition of the vegetation, or of the rate of fire spread, fire intensity and difficulty of control. It does however serve as a useful measure of drought occurrence. 7, record 49, English, - Keetch%2DByram%20drought%20index

Keetch-Byram Drought Index(KBDI) :... 0-200 : Soil moisture and large class fuel moistures are high and do not contribute much to fire intensity. Typical of spring dormant season following winter precipitation. 200-400 : Typical of late spring, early growing season. Lower litter and duff layers are drying and beginning to contribute to fire intensity. 400-600 : Typical of late summer, early fall. Lower litter and duff layers actively contribute to fire intensity and will burn actively. 600-800 : Often associated with more severe drought with increased wildfire occurrence. Intense, deep burning fires with significant downwind spotting can be expected. Live fuels can also be expected to burn actively at these levels. 9, record 49, English, - Keetch%2DByram%20drought%20index

A flow approaching a mountain barrier will most likely go over the barrier rather than around it if the barrier is long, if the cross-barrier wind component is strong, and if the flow is unstable, near-neutral, or only weakly stable. These conditions are frequently met in the United States because the long, north-south oriented mountain ranges lie perpendicular to the prevailing westerly winds and the jet stream. Mountain barriers orientated perpendicular to the flow cause the highest accelerations across the barrier and frequently generate lee waves downwind of the obstacle as well as downslope windstorms. 1, record 60, English, - mountain%20barrier

Heat lows or thermal troughs often build north along the coasts of California and Oregon in the summer. Thermal troughs can cause "east winds" in the Washington and Oregon Cascades. If however, a relatively strong disturbance in the upper atmosphere moves across the NW, it will force the thermal trough east of the Cascades. In most cases, a moderate to strong push of marine air will follow, along with strong, gusty, west winds along the east slopes of the Cascades. Gusty winds and thunderstorms can be associated with the passage of a thermal trough. 2, record 65, English, - thermal%20trough

A front may have troughing along its length, but not all troughs are frontal! Indeed, not all troughs have ’weather’ associated with them in the cloud/rainfall sense. Lee troughs found downwind of a major range of hills/mountains are often cloudless, and thermal troughs forming over land during the day due to mesoscale heating may only be found by careful drawing of isobars : if the air is dry and/or stable, little significant cloud will be associated with this feature. 3, record 65, English, - thermal%20trough

Supercell [is] a thunderstorm with a persistent rotating updraft. Supercells are rare, but are responsible for a remarkably high percentage of severe weather events - especially tornadoes, extremely large hail and damaging straight-line winds. They frequently travel to the right of the main environmental winds (i.e., they are right movers). Radar characteristics often (but not always) include a hook or pendant, bounded weak echo region (BWER), V-notch, mesocyclone, and sometimes a TVS [Tornado Vortex Signature]. Visual characteristics often include a rain-free base (with or without a wall cloud), tail cloud, flanking line, overshooting top, and back-sheared anvil, all of which normally are observed in or near the right rear or southwest part of the storm. Storms exhibiting these characteristics often are called classic supercells; however HP (High Precipitation) storms and LP (Low Precipitation) storms also are supercell varieties. 3, record 68, English, - classic%20supercell

The fluxes between the Earth’s surface and the atmosphere are usually called surface fluxes. Many processes are involved such as evaporation from land and sea, warming and cooling of the earth, emission and deposition of gases and particles. These processes are vital to life and are being investigated in various scientific fields such as agriculture, bioclimatology, hydrology and meteorology. Surface fluxes traditionally are measured by instruments mounted on meteorological masts. Typical measurement data are wind speed, air temperature, air humidity and concentration of gases (eg CO2) and particles at several levels above ground. Calculation of surface fluxes are done by classical similarity-scaling equations on turbulent flow in the atmospheric boundary layer. This method applies only for large homogeneous landscapes (of the order of kilometers). 3, record 69, English, - surface%20flux

Looping plume... The up and down motion starts as soon as the gas issues from the stack and is caused by atmospheric, eddies, often the result of thermal convection. It is an optical illusion that any particular parcel of gas follows a sinuous path as it moves downwind; if it forms the top of a wave near the stack, it remains as the top of a wave as it moves downwind. It is the sinuosities that move with the wind, growing in size as they travel. Looping is seldom observed from stacks taller than lOOm. 3, record 77, English, - looping%20plume

There are at least three distinct types of cold pool : 1. Large(in areal extent), slow-moving vortices at latitudes poleward of roughly 50deg N & S. They are often over, or immediately downwind of the source regions of polar or arctic air masses, in such areas as the Canadian Arctic or Siberian Russia.... 2. Once cold air from the source region as detailed in(1.) above is caught up in the circulation of mid-latitude depressions, the characteristics of the air mass are altered. Warming from below(over relatively warmer sea surfaces for example), leads to instability developing, and with an accompanying injection of moisture(after a reasonable length of passage over the sea), cloudy convection(showers, thunderstorms) is triggered. Cold pools in these situations are often maxima of such activity, with surface charts showing west or northwesterly airflow, often with cyclonically curved isobars. The cold pool will move in the general synoptic flow, and will eventually warm out(disappear) due to sensible & latent heat exchanges within the environment of the cold pool. However,... sometimes the cold pool will transform into a slow-moving, longer-lasting entity, particularly if the feed of ex-polar air on its western flank is maintained-this occurs in highly meridional situations. 3. A pool of cold air can also become ’detached’ at lower latitudes... 2, record 94, English, - cold%20air%20pool

With regard to the Pacific side of the Arctic Basin, Overland et al. (1997) report that the position of the tropospheric cold pool is approximately centered over the Canadian Arctic and the Beaufort Sea, displaced from the North Pole by orographic effects of the North American mountain ranges. The result is advection of atmospheric heat and moisture into the Greenland and Barents seas, and the eastern Arctic. The position of this arctic cold pool in turn affects the position of the arctic front and the atmospheric circulation in the western Pacific. 1, record 95, English, - arctic%20cold%20pool
