DEF

A gas burner in which combustion air is blown in by a motor driven fan.

CONT

[A] power burner [is a] burner in which the combustion air is supplied by a fan or blower at sufficient pressure to overcome the resistance of the burner and the appliance.

OBS

Power burner [means] a burner in which either gas or air or both are supplied at pressures exceeding, for gas, the line pressure and, for air, atmospheric pressure; this added pressure being applied at the burner. A [power] burner for which air for combustion is supplied by a fan ahead of the appliance is commonly designated as a forced draft burner.

OBS

Forced-draft burner ... commonly called a "power burner".

OBS

"Burners of the power type use a fan to supply and control combustion air". Depending on ASHRAE Handbook & Product Directory, a "power burner" could be of the natural draft(natural-draft power burner) or forced-draft type(forced-draft power burner).

OBS

CONT

DEF

A period of time after the run period during which the burner motor (blower or fan) continues to run, driving all the products of combustion and any unburned fuel from the combustion chamber, and supplying air to burn fuel being purged from the fuel line downstream from the safety shutoff valve.

CONT

When the burner is shut off for any reason, the program controller causes the forced draft fan to continue delivering air for a specified time to post-purge the unit of any atomized oil and combustible gases. This post-purge should amount to at least two air changes in the combustion area, gas passages, and breeching.

CONT

The evaporating chamber. The third chamber [of the three chamber system], which forms the base of the toilet, is the evaporating surface from where any excess liquids which cannot be absorbed by the compost are evaporated or drained. Liquid is evaporated by drawing air through the intake holes at the base of the toilet, over the evaporating surface, and up the vent stack. On electric models air is drawn in by a fan, while non electric models use natural draft induced by the chimney effect of a 4" vent stack. In both cases a partial vacuum is maintained which ensures that no odors can escape.

CONT

To ensure that the compost cannot get saturated, a screen at the rear of the drum filters any excess liquid directly into the evaporating chamber.

CONT

The pressure atomizing induced draft burner uses the same type of oil pump, nozzle, and ignition system as the high pressure atomizing gun burner. The basic difference in construction, as compared to the gun burner, is the location of the burner fan downstream of the combustion chamber.

Forced Air Wood Furnaces. Central wood-burning furnaces are controlled by a wall mounted thermostat in the living area. Temperature and fan controls are the same as those found on oil and gas furnaces. Unlike room heaters, which produce a steady heat output by periodic manual adjustments of the draft control, most wood furnaces operate in cycles. A cycle starts with the thermostat sensing that heat is needed in the room where it is located. It signals the furnace control system which opens the combustion air damper and a hot fire develops. When the air inside the furnace's sheet metal casing gets hot, a preset fan control starts the circulating blower and the warm air is moved through the ducts to all areas of the house.

Condensing flue gas furnaces and boilers... Most of the recent publicity about new gas furnaces has mentioned the condensing units. The furnaces have additional heat exchange surfaces, often made of stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant material, to lower the flue gas temperature below the temperature of condensation and regain some or all of the heat these gases contain. Most have an induced draft fan. There is no need for a chimney. Combustion products are merely vented through an outside wall and liquid condensate drained off through a plastic tube.

OBS

Another development in furnace and boiler technology offers efficiency improvements of 15 to 25 per cent over the conventional furnace. This furnace is equipped with electric ignition and a built-in induced draft fan(a device that provides and ensures the escape of combustion by-products) and no draft hood. Elimination of the draft hood dramatically reduces the furnace's overall air requirement while the furnace is operating, and reduces the warm air outflow up the chimney on the off-cycle.
