The drug lasalocid is permitted in poultry raised for meat. The Soil Association claims that tests on eggs by the UK government's veterinary medicines directorate show residues were found in 12 per cent of egg samples last year, up from 1 per cent in 1999. This means that consumers may be eating up to three million eggs a day containing residues.... Lasalocid is regarded by the UK government as a food additive rather than a growth-promoting antibiotic, over which there are controls. FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. FDA is also responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed innovations that make medicines more effective, safer, and more affordable and by helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to use medicines and foods to maintain and improve their health. FDA also has responsibility for regulating the manufacturing, marketing and distribution of tobacco products to protect the public health and to reduce tobacco use by minors. Finally, FDA plays a significant role in the Nation’s counterterrorism capability. Although there are no scientifically proven minimum safe limits for concentrations of certain toxic and carcinogenic chemicals in food, air and water, such "safe limits" in fact have been set by the appropriate food and drug administrations or their equivalents. The implication is that a dose of low-level radiation with no acceptable safe level is more health-threatening than a low-level dose of, for example, dioxin. In fact, the Task Force finds it is more reasonable to accept a maximum permissible level for ionizing radiation because background radiation is a ubiquitous, naturally occurring phenomenon, whereas there is no naturally occurring level of polychlorinated biphenyls. 3, record 33, English, - safe%20limit

Artificial sweeteners are sugar-substitutes. There are 2 kinds..., nutritive and non-nutritive. Nutritive sweeteners provide some calories, non-nutritive sweeteners typically provide zero calories.... Non-nutritive artificial sweeteners are intensely sweet-between 200-700 times sweeter than sugar. They add sweetness to foods for people(like diabetics) who need to limit their intake of sugar. They contain little or no calories or glycemic response(impact on blood sugar levels).... FDA [Food and Drug Administration] has approved 4 nonnutritive sweeteners and regulates them as food additives : saccharin(on an interim basis pending additional study), aspartame, acesulfame potassium(or acesulfame-K), and sucralose. 7, record 46, English, - non%2Dnutritive%20sweetener

Industry has adopted the term "tamper-evident" packaging, but there is no officially recognized definition for it. The United States Food and Drug Administration(FDA)... defines a "tamper-resistant" package as a package "having an indicator or barrier to entry which, if breached or missing, can reasonably be expected to provide visible evidence to consumers that tampering has occurred. "Common industry usage substitutes the term "tamper-evident" for the term "tamper-resistant".... The FDA has not objected to this substitution, nor has it made any official recognition of it as a synonymous term.... [It] seems likely that use of both terms will continue for some time. All practitioners and the FDA are agreed that the term "tamper-proof" is not appropriate and must not be used. 2, record 55, English, - tamper%2Devident%20packaging

The English term "drug" has a less restrictive meaning than its French cognate "drogue". In English it not only conveys the meaning of any substance, whether legally available or not, which causes addiction, but also that of any substance intended for use in the treatment of a disease with or without a prescription. In French the primary meaning is that of an illicit substance, despite a more generic use found in legal contexts(Food and Drugs Act=Loi des aliments et drogues). Intrinsically more specific, the French favor the use of "produit pharmaceutique" and "médicament", as well as derivatives thereof, e. g. "pharmacodépendance, toxicomanie, etc. Consequently, in the case of "drug withdrawal syndrome", the use of "drogue"(i. e. substance that causes addiction) is not entirely inappropriate. 2, record 66, English, - drug%20withdrawal%20syndrome

Food coloring agents may be organic or inorganic, natural or synthetic. Prominent among them are the(erroneously called) coal-tar colors certified for food use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration. These and certain vegetable colors such as annatto, turmeric, and beta-carotene(now also produced synthetically) have wide usage in butter and margarine, mustard and other condiments, candies, ice cream, cake toppings, beverages, and other products.
