EAR TEST [13 records]

Record 1 2024-09-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Physiotherapy
DEF

A test used to diagnose benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) that consists of a series of head, neck, and body movements that reproduce the vertigo sensation.

CONT

The Dix-Hallpike test is typically performed in a doctor's office. The doctor will ask you to sit upright on an exam table with your legs stretched out in front of you and your head turned to one side. They will then ask you to lower your head and torso back so that you end up lying with your head stretched off the edge of the exam table, turned with one ear down at a 45-degree angle. If there are misplaced calcium deposits(also called canaliths) in the posterior canal of your inner ear, this will trigger vertigo symptoms.

OBS

Benign positional paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common causes of vertigo. The Dix-Hallpike maneuver is the gold standard test used to diagnose BPPV, which is crucial in confirming posterior canal BPPV.

DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Diagnostic Procedures (Medicine)
  • Hearing
DEF

A method of determining and quantifying the ability to hear a variety and range of audio frequencies with the help of an electronic device called an audiometer.

CONT

Audiometry provides a more precise measurement of hearing. Air conduction is tested by wearing earphones attached to the audiometer. Pure tones of controlled intensity are delivered to one ear at a time. The patient is asked to raise a hand, press a button, or otherwise indicate when he hears a sound. The minimum intensity(volume) required to hear each tone is graphed. An attachment called a bone oscillator is placed against the bone behind each ear(mastoid bone) to test bone conduction.

DEF

  • Hearing
DEF

A test for differentiating between hearing impairment of conductive or sensorineural origin. The stem of a vibrating tuning fork is placed on the vertex or midline of the forehead; if the sound is heard best in the affected ear, the impairment is probably of the conductive type; if heard best in the normal ear, the impairment is probably of the sensorineural type.

DEF

CONT

In the Body Rotation Device(BRD) the astronauts sit in the experiment's chair and become the test subjects. Experiments conducted with BRD will study vestibular reactions in the astronauts as they are spun around in the chair. Test conductors can change what the astronauts see as they are spun and video cameras watch their eyes and record their reactions. The spinning astronaut keeps his thumb on a "kill switch" to stop the chair when it starts to become too much to handle. Scientists will use data from the experiments conducted with BRD to help in the design of more effective rehabilitation procedures in patients with severe inner ear diseases.

CONT
