Record 1 2011-12-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mineralogy
CONT

The cumulus minerals represent early crystals that accumulated from a magma to form the framework of the rock and are typically sub-equant and or euhedral in habit.

Record 2 2004-05-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Gemmology
  • Diamond Industry
DEF

A characteristic of some rough diamonds; two crystals that are bonded along a seam and rotated 60° to one another; inclusions are normally trapped along the seam; also referred to as twinning.

CONT

Crystal distorted at the atomic level early in its growth as a result of changes in the orientation of atoms; as atoms continue to attach themselves to the re-oriented segment, another crystal begins to form, intergrown with the first. Twin crystals can be made up of two or more such intergrown crystals holding planes of atoms in common.

CONT

Seam line along which twinned crystal is formed.

Record 3 2000-09-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
  • Semiconductors (Electronics)
  • Industrial Ceramics
  • Physics of Solids
DEF

(Semicond. 1903) Boundary between two tiny crystal regions of a multicrystalline material; utilized for rectification properties in early semiconductor diodes.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
  • Semi-conducteurs (Électronique)
  • Céramiques industrielles
  • Physique des solides
CONT

[...] le frittage ne fait pas intervenir [...] une liaison des particules par une phase vitreuse. La cohérence et la densification des poudres pressées se produisent par suite de transformations affectant la surface des particules et conduisant à des interfaces solide-solide appelées joints de grains.

OBS

(Rodot-Dupas, p.5) (Semicond. 1903).

PHR

Fragilité des joints de grain.
