... 30 days earlier seeding does not mean you get a 30 day earlier harvest. It might give you only 10 early days at the end of the growing season. But that 10 days is nothing to sneeze at. Having early crop on some fields lets you harvest them earlier, which reduces risk of frost, hail, wind, insects and other enemies. Early harvests often produce higher grade and they spread the workload.

OBS

The common law rule that a tenant at the end of his tenancy had no claim against his landlord for any improvements or crops left on the land had an early exception in the doctrine of emblements, an exception which was well established by the reign of Edward IV. The word "emblements" means a right given by law in certain cases to the tenant of an estate of uncertain duration which has unexpectedly determined, without any fault of such tenant, to take the crops growing upon the land when his estate determines, although the estate itself has ceased. It is derived from the French "emblavence de bled"(corn sprung or put above ground), and strictly signifies the growing crops of sown land; but the doctrine of emblements extends not only to corn sown, but to roots planted and potatoes, and other annual artificial products. The growing crops of those vegetable productions of the soil which are annually produced by the labour of the cultivator are emblements.(Woodfall' s, 28th ed., 1978, p. 2044)

The drawbridge of ancient and medieval periods was built for military purposes. It was constructed to bridge the moat around the castle or fortified town and to be raised in case of attack. The open leaf also constituted an additional barricade across the entrance to the fortification. Many of these early structures were operated by a lever system. One end of the lever was connected to the free end of the span by chains, and the other was actually counterweighted. OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings.

A cool, brief interval in an otherwise warm interglacial stage.

CONT

Over the last 2,000 years the most widespread changes observed in the climate record are those associated with the Medieval Warm Epoch (approximately 800 to 1200 AD) and the Little Ice Age (approximately 1400 to 1800 AD). ... The Little Ice Age, however, seems to have been more nearly global, but, again, substantial differences can be seen when time series from different regions are compared. The cause of the Little Ice Age is not known.

CONT

Glaciers and ice caps have experienced negative mass balances and have been retreating since the end of the Little Ice Age in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.... The end of the Little Ice Age occurred earliest mid-1800s for interior mountains of northern mid-latitudes, such as the European Alps, and took place latest early 1900s on islands of the South Pacific, as in New Zealand. The end of the Little Ice Age is just beginning to have an effect in Antarctica.

OBS

Originally employed for a mid-Holocene event in the Yosemite area, California, about 3000 years B.P. (Mathes, 1930), [the term Little Ice Age] is also widely used for the 16th- and 18th-century cool phases.

OBS

Litte Ice Age: This term was coined by F. E. Matthes (1942) to refer to the "subatlantic" (as used by palynologists); after him, it was used only for the much shorter cold period ... defined [as follows:] "Recent phase of glacial advance [which] is generally admitted [to having taken] place within the last 500-700 years." CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Stoneware
DEF

Red stoneware made in Staffordshire by the brothers John Philip Elers and David Elers at the end of the 17th century and in the early years of the 18th century. The ware was precisely and thinly potted, the colour varying from buff through red to brown as a result of variations in the firing temperature. It was inspired by the red stoneware of Yi-Hsing, and was the ancestor of Wedgwood's Rosso Antico.

OBS

"Blow" is not a standard term used in tennis circles. However it can be used to describe the hitting the ball with the tennis racket. Related terms : drive, shot. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. A "shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather a blunt, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" can often be used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings.

[The American Twist serve:] hit the ball a glancing blow while your racket is still traveling upward.
