There has been a continuing trend toward the development of earlier maturing varieties of wheat. The advantages of early maturity are many. Early wheat often escapes damage from heat, drought, insects, or disease(and early harvest) is advantageous in areas where multiple cropping is practiced. 1, record 1, English, - early%20maturity

In 1892, at Agriculture Canada's Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa, Dr. Charles Saunders made a selection of a cross of an early ripening Indian wheat, Hard Red Calcutta, with Red Fife. This selection was developed and licensed under the name Marquis. It was early maturing, produced high yields, and had the same excellent milling and baking qualities as Red Fife. Its quality became world renowned and was the single most important factor in establishing Canada's initial reputation as a producer of high quality wheat. Its performance was such that all inferior varieties were practically eliminated from production. 1, record 2, English, - early%20maturing%20wheat

1, record 2, French, - bl%C3%A9%20pr%C3%A9coce

Wheat was introduced into Western Canada in 1812 by the Selkirk Settlers who settled in the Red River Valley of Manitoba. There were many difficult years in the early history of wheat production. On a number of occasions almost entire crops were destroyed by grasshoppers, rust epidemics and frost. With the introduction of earlier maturing and more disease resistant varieties, the industry progressed in keeping with growth of population. The first wheat exported from Manitoba was 23 tonnes of Red Fife seed to Ontario in 1876. 1, record 3, English, - Selkirk%20Settlers
