  • Types of Constructed Works

CONT

The Red River style of log building construction was one of the original methods used in Canada. The logs were left rounded with notched ends. This type of construction consisted of a basic frame of grooved, vertical, squared posts, mortised and tenoned into sills at their bases or set directly into the ground (in rare, early cases), and at their tips, mortised and tenoned into squared plates. Horizontal, squared timbers were fixed between these posts, with the tenons of the horizontal timbers fitting into the vertical groove of the posts. Roof structures of varying types were built on the wall plates. Red River Frame construction allowed both flexibility and portability. Large buildings could be erected using short logs, and buildings could be easily dismantled, moved and put up elsewhere. For these reasons, Red River Frame was the predominant type of construction used in the Canadian West during the fur trade era. The Red River style of log construction has spread across North America and is currently enjoying new popularity. Red River log construction is yet another Metis contribution to the development of Canada.

CONT

Buildings constructed before 1870 are of great importance because they recall the Red River Settlement era. They will be either of stone or log construction (the specialized log construction undertaken in Manitoba at this time was called Red River frame construction).

CONT

The former Grey Nun's Convent is recognized historically as the headquarters of a French Canadian religious order who came to the Red River Settlement in 1844... The two-storey hipped roof structure was constructed of white oaken logs... It is an outstanding example of early Red River frame construction and one of the oldest dwellings still in use in the Prairie Provinces.

The ministère du Développement économique, de l'Innovation et de l'Exportation has a rich and interesting history. It began in 1935, when the mandate of the ministère des Affaires municipales was broadened to include industry and trade, two sectors of increasing importance to the government. In 1943, the ministère de l'Industrie et du Commerce was founded. Over the years, other mandates were grafted onto its mission : technology in 1988, science in 1994, and external trade in 1996. In 1998, the science and technology mandates were entrusted to the ministère de la Recherche, de la Science et de la Technologie, which, in its early days, was charged with devising a scientific policy to bring about a new convergence between universities, industry and government. In 1998, the ministère des Régions was created as a successor to the Secrétariat au développement des régions in order to implement the new policy to support local and regional development, with a view to promoting and assisting the development of the regions and ensuring consistent government action. On April 29, 2003, the Premier announced the creation of the ministère du Développement économique et régional(MDER) out of these four entities. The purpose of the merger was to improve intervention targeting regional businesses and stakeholders by simplifying it and making it more coherent and efficient. In April 2004, "Recherche" was added to the MDER's name. In February 2005, the MDERR was divided into three departments : the ministère du Développement économique, de l'Innovation et de l'Exportation; the ministère du Tourisme; and the ministère des Affaires municipales et des Régions.

The Acid Rain National Early Warning System(ARNEWS) was one of Canada's national forest health monitoring programs. Established in 1984, ARNEWS was to "monitor the condition and changes in the condition of the forest in order to detect early signs of acid rain damage". The program as always extended beyond its original intent of an acid rain monitoring system to encompass a role in forest health and biomonitoring. In recognition of this, the original network of some 100 plots across Canada was expanded to 169 plots in 1991.

Containers, vessels, or tanks in which chemical and biological reactions are carried out, are commonly called reactors. In the field of water/wastewater treatment, there are six types of reactors: 1) Batch reactor, 2) Plug-flow reactor, 3) Complete mix reactor, 4) Arbitrary flow reactor, 5) Packed-bed reactor, and 6) fluidized-bed reactor. The use of any type of reactor is dependent on the nature of water to be treated, process requirements, reaction kinetics, and some other factors, the efficiency and kinetics of water and wastewater processes are often dependent on the hydraulic characteristics of the reactor.

CONT

... the beneficial effects of using water hyacinths on effluent quality was demonstrated clearly in side-by-side ponds with and without floating plants... Evaluation of early results with water hyacinth suggested that soluble BOD [biochemical oxygen demand] removal in the system could best be modeled as a first order reaction in a complete-mix reactor...

Branchiosaurus(meaning "gill lizard") was a very early amphibian from early Carboniferous to the early Permian period(roughly 300 million years ago). It was NOT a dinosaur. Like all amphibians, they had to live near the water since amphibian eggs have no shells and must be laid in the water(or in very damp areas) or they will dry out and die. Fossils of these salamander-sized amphibian have been found in Europe. They were the closest relatives of the lissamphibians. Classification : Subclass Labyrinthodont, Order Temnospondyl, Genus Branchiosaurus, many species.
