One significant knowledge gap necessary for assessing ecosystem-wide impacts of restoration in... estuaries is a characterization of baseline lower trophic levels. These lower tropic levels are the lowest part of the food web where organisms such as plant-like phytoplankton serve as food to animals such as zooplankton in the water column. Other organisms of lower trophic levels include plant-like microphytobenthos and marine worms living within the sediments. These organisms form an important part of the estuary ecosystem [and] provide energy at the base of the food chain [that] support the growth of larger predators at the top[, ] such as speckled trout or red fish[. These] organisms also help to break down debris, put oxygen back into sediments, and can provide a biological window into the health of an estuary. 1, record 2, English, - lower%20trophic%20level

Trophic levels refer to a level or position in a food chain or food web. It is one of the oldest concepts in ecology that seeks to explain the energy relations between different organisms.... the bottom trophic level is known as the primary producers. These are usually plants like phytoplankton, algae, and seaweed. They can make their own food(usually photosynthesizing sugars from the sun), and do not need to consume other plants or animals. They are typically the most abundant organisms found in the ecosystem. 1, record 3, English, - primary%20producer

[A] thermonuclear bomb, also called hydrogen bomb, or H-bomb, [is a] weapon whose enormous explosive power results from an uncontrolled self-sustaining chain reaction in which isotopes of hydrogen combine under extremely high temperatures to form helium in a process known as nuclear fusion. The high temperatures that are required for the reaction are produced by the detonation of an atomic bomb. A thermonuclear bomb differs fundamentally from an atomic bomb in that it utilizes the energy released when two light atomic nuclei combine, or fuse, to form a heavier nucleus. 4, record 4, English, - hydrogen%20bomb

Triggered conformational changes... are the motions of groups of atoms(i. e. individual side-chains) or whole sections of a protein(i. e. loops of chain, domains of secondary and tertiary structure, or subunit), which occur as a response to a specific stimulus. The distance moved can be as much as 10 [angstrom unit] or more. The time scale can be estimated by studies of the rate of binding or turnover reactions. The energy for triggered conformational change comes from specific interactions, such as electrostatic attractions or hydrogen bonding interactions. The best-known example of a triggered conformational change is the transition in tertiary structure that occurs when ligands bind to the iron atoms of hemoglobin. 1, record 13, English, - triggered%20conformational%20change

The types of substances whose binding can trigger a specific conformational change include substrates (dihydroxyacetone phosphate in triose phosphate isomerase), coenzymes (NAD binding to lactate dehydrogenase), allosteric effectors (CTP and ATP in aspartic transcarbamylase), inhibitors (statine-containing polypeptide inhibitors of acid proteases) and even protons (the Bohr effect in hemoglobin; pH-dependent conformational changes in adenylate kinase). 1, record 13, English, - triggered%20conformational%20change

We present a new Monte Carlo lattice model to study the folding of two-dimensional heteropolymer chains. Previous lattice model studies of two-dimensional chains have been performed on square grids using predefined "move sets" of allowed moves. The motion of the polymer chain in these models is thus highly constrained. To add greater flexibility, we use a triangular lattice and allow the chain to choose its own moves. Physically unrealistic moves are prevented by including kinetic energy effects in the Metropolis algorithm. From the results, we can characterize all of the possible one-and two-monomer moves and sort them according to relative importance. Greater flexibility in the lattice model produces several significant and interesting physical consequences. 1, record 15, English, - Monte%20Carlo%20lattice%20model

1, record 15, French, - Monte%20Carlo%20sur%20r%C3%A9seau

Although heat is also a factor in the deterioration of asphalt on a roof, the real source of decay is the energy carried by the ultra-violet(UV) light of the sun, combined with the ready supply of oxygen in ozone. The "links" in asphalt molecular chains are hydrogen. The molecular bond is overcome by the strong attraction of the oxygen, which pulls the hydrogen away from the asphalt molecules. This process is called photo-oxidation, and these breaks in the "aliphatic" chain results in the shrinkage cracking common to asphalt. This phenomenon is commonly called "alligatoring" in roofing parlance, a term which describes the similarity of aged asphalt surfaces to an alligator's back. 3, record 17, English, - alligatoring

... it has long been known that to compress air to high pressures a staged process should be used, compressing air to first 50 bars, then to 150 bars then three hundred and so on. This technique, commonly employed by the air and gas liquefaction industries, uses a fraction of the energy used to compress the gas in one operation. The secret of the compressed air motor is simply to reverse the process-decompress the air in stages and in so doing efficiently release energy at each point in the chain. 2, record 18, English, - compressed%2Dair%20engine

1, record 18, French, - moteur%20%C3%A0%20air%20comprim%C3%A9
