Record 4 2017-10-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Braking Systems (Motor Vehicles and Bicycles)
CONT

Hill-holder is a name for the mechanism invented by Studebaker that holds the brake until the clutch is at the friction point, making it easier to start up hills from a stop in manual transmission automobiles.

OBS

When a driver stops their vehicle on an incline where the nose of the car is sufficiently higher than the rear of the car, the system is engaged when the driver's foot is depressing the brake pedal, and then the clutch pedal is fully depressed. Once set, the driver must keep the clutch pedal fully depressed, however, they may remove their foot from the brake pedal. To disengage the system and move the car forward, the driver selects first gear, feathers(applies) the gas pedal, and slowly releases the clutch pedal, which, at a point in its travel, releases the braking system allowing the car to proceed.

DEF

CONT

South Pointing Carriage is the earliest known example of a land vehicle navigation system.... historical research has only recently established that [it] had nothing to do with magnetism, [but] was based on the principle(now called "the differential odometer") that for a given change in vehicle heading, a vehicle's outer wheels travel a mathematically predictable distance farther than the inner wheels. When changing heading, a gear train driven by an... outer wheel automatically engaged and rotated a horizontal turntable to exactly offset the change in heading... a figure with an outstretched arm mounted on the turntable always pointed in the original direction....

CONT

This device, when engaged, eliminates the backlash(play) between the nut and the table leadscrew permitting the operation of climb(down) milling... Two independent nuts are mounted on the lead screw. These nuts engage a common crown gear which in turn meshes with a rack. Axial movement of the rack is controlled by the backlash eliminator engaging knob located on the front of the saddle. By turning the knob "in", the nuts are forced to move along the leadscrew in opposite directions, removing all backlash.
