Oxyfuel combustion. An alternative is to burn the fossil fuel in pure or enriched oxygen. In such a fashion the flue gas will contain mostly CO2 and H2O. A part of the flue gas needs to be recycled into the combustion chamber in order to control the flame temperature. From the non-recycled flue gas, water vapor can be readily condensed, and the CO2 can be compressed and piped directly to the storage site.

Le principe de l'oxycombustion [...] utilise de l'oxygène pur comme comburant - Cette technologie n'est pas à proprement parler une capture du CO2. Il s'agit de produire une fumée concentrée à 90 % de CO2 en réalisant une combustion à l'oxygène pur. Avec un recyclage d'une partie du CO2 en substitution de l'azote de l'air, l'oxycombustion est adaptée à une remise à niveau des installations existantes.

L'oxycombustion permet d'obtenir un flux de dioxyde de carbone (CO2) exempt d'azote, plus facile à récupérer et à conditionner pour le transport et le stockage. Elle fait partie des procédés dits du «charbon propre».

Because the hot and cold towers of a stage are in series, the two liquid to gas flow ratios (L/G) are thus directly related and an L/G change in one tower causes an L/G change of the same direction in the other tower. Because the towers can be regarded as absorbers and strippers, and L/G increase favors deuterium enrichment in the hot tower and an L/G decrease favors deuterium enrichment in the cold tower.

If a portion of either or both of the enriched gas or liquid are fed to a second pair of cold and hot towers, further enrichment will be achieved. The final deuterium concentration will depend upon the number of cold and hot tower pairs in the process.
