The Cornish term "gossan" is applied to chemically weathered, iron-stained outcrops of sulfide mineral deposits. Synonyms include the French "chapeau de fer", the German "eiserner Hut", and the Spanish "colorados". The term "pacos ore" is used in Bolivia for gossans over tin veins that are residually enriched in cassiterite. Most workers reserve the term "capping" for gossans over disseminated sulfide deposits of the porphyry copper type.

Les constituants ferrugineux, et avant tout la pyrite, minéral dominant dans la plupart des gisements sulfurés, se transforment en limonite, sur place ou avec une certaine migration. Celle-ci mêlée au quartz peu attaqué et surtout à de la silice secondaire précipitée à l'état concrétionné, constitue le classique «chapeau de fer» («gossan», en anglais) de beaucoup de gîtes métalliques. La structure est souvent cariée et vacuolaire, ou typiquement cloisonnée.

L'aspect de cette zone est souvent caractérisé par les oxydes de fer [...] d'où le nom de «chapeau de fer» qui lui a été attribué.

Dans la partie supérieure d'un corps minéralisé, par exemple un filon, entre la surface de la nappe phréatique et la surface du sol existe une zone aérée où percolent des eaux chargées d'oxygène et de gaz carbonique. Dans cette zone, le filon est oxydé; il y a formation de sulfates et d'hydroxydes ferriques.

Secondary sulfide zone.-In many metalliferous deposits, particularly those of copper, there is found below the zone of oxidation, a second zone containing sulfide minerals that have reprecipitated from down-trickling solutions containing metals leached from the oxidized zone. This secondary sulfide zone generally marks the change from oxidizing to reducing conditions, such as the level of ground water, at the time of secondary deposition. The zone is often greatly enriched and may constitute economically recoverable ore, whereas the original primary deposit may not.
