There is no official flag on land for the United Kingdom. The government has stated that there is no objection to subjects using the Union Jack on land, so it has become the de facto national flag. At sea, there are three official national flags at sea, the white, red and blue ensigns. The Union Jack is reserved at sea for specific, military uses; civilian ships should fly the Red Ensign, a red flag with the Union Jack in the canton.

In British nautical use ensign applies specifically to a flag with a white, blue or red field, and the union in the corner. Since 1864 the ensign of the Royal Navy and the Royal Yacht Squadron has been white, that of the naval reserve, of ships in the service of public offices, and of certain yacht clubs, blue, and the "merchant ensign" red.

From the time of the establishment of the Royal Canadian Navy in 1910 until the arrival of the Maple Leaf national flag in 1965, HMC Ships wore the White Ensign, and naval shore parties on the march carried the White Ensign. It was a white flag with a red St. George's cross overall, with the Union flag in the upper canton at the hoist. It was identical to that worn by ships of the Royal Navy and other navies of the Commonwealth.

The act of "Dipping her Ensign" to a warship by a merchant ship is a form of salute. It is to be treated as such by HMC Ships, and the salute returned by dipping the Ship's Ensign. As there is no regulation whereby a merchant vessel is required to dip her Ensign to a man-of-war, this practice must be considered as an act of custom and courtesy rather than a rule.
