Catalysis where an electrophilic or nucleophilic group on the peptide chain of the enzyme forms a covalent bond with the substrate. This highly reactive covalent intermediate between the enzyme and the substrate has a high probability of entering the transition state permitting the substrate to find a lower pass over the activation-energy barrier.

Many of the examples of covalent catalysis in enzyme-catalysed reactions involve attack by a nucleophilic side chain at an electron-deficient centre in the substrate; such attack is termed nucleophilic catalysis. Examples of nucleophilic catalysis are provided by chymotrypsin and fructose-bisphosphate aldolase, in these cases the nucleophilic side chains are those of serine and lysine respectively. Other types of side chain which have been found to participate in nucleophilic catalysis include cysteine ... and histidine....

Pratylenchus spp. lesion nematodes, probably as widespread as a group as root-knot nematodes and even more serious, though less readily recognized. The brown or black root condition usually comes from secondary fungi entering and rotting the roots after cells are pierced and torn by the nematodes.

The more general term "meadow nematode" is sometimes encountered as a synonym of "lesion nematode".

The Forestry Panel of the North America Plant Protection Organization(NAPPO), with the advice of the NAFC Forest Insect and Disease Study Group(NAFC/IDSG), recently finalized a standard on dunnage. Once implemented, all foreign wood packing material and dunnage must be treated to prevent the introduction of harmful alien pests such as the Asian long-horned beetles and other foreign pests from entering North America.
