The arrector muscles of the hair, or arrector pili, are formed by bundles of closely packed smooth muscle cells. The muscle extends obliquely attaching to the hair follicle to the papillary layer of the dermis.... When the arrector pili muscle contracts, it pulls the hair into a vertical position. It also elevates the epidermis where the hair enters and depresses the epidermis where the muscle attaches at the papillary layer of the dermis, thus forming small hillocks known as goosebumps. In addition, because of the relationship between the arrector pili muscle and the sebaceous gland at the hair follicle, its contraction aids the expulsion of the glands contents. 2, record 4, English, - arrector%20muscle%20of%20hair

5, record 4, French, - muscle%20arrecteur%20du%20poil

The formation of new cells, and the initiation of differentiation in plants takes place in specific regions called meristems. Meristems can also be categorized. The apical meristems occur in the shoot and root tips. Apical meristems are the source of all other meristems. They form the three primary meristematic tissues(or primary meristems) : protoderm, ground meristem, and procambium. These three primary meristems will differentiate into the three primary tissues :epidermis, ground tissues(pith and cortex) and vascular tissues(xylem and phloem). 3, record 13, English, - apical%20meristem

2, record 13, French, - m%C3%A9rist%C3%A8me%20apical

Current devices licensed for administration of smallpox vaccine in the United States include the bifurcated needle... The objective is to penetrate the stratum corneum layer of the skin and deliver a small amount of vaccine to the deep epidermis.... This simple device is easy to use, uses a very small amount(0. 0025 ml) of smallpox vaccine, and provides standardization of vaccine administration. The needle is dipped into reconstituted vaccine and the small volume is held between the two tines by capillary action.... WHO [World Health Organization] and CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] guidelines call for the needle to be held at a 90° angle(perpendicular) to the skin and the vaccine administered by 15 strokes to an area of about 5 mm diameter. The strokes should be sufficiently vigorous to produce a trace of blood at the vaccination site. 3, record 46, English, - bifurcated%20needle

The acellular dermal graft is processed from human donor skin obtained from approved tissue banks. In processing, the epidermis is removed, and the remaining dermal layer is washed in detergent solutions to remove cellular components. After the tissue has been decellularized, the acellular collagen matrix is then cryoprotected and rapidly freeze-dried by a patented process to preserve biochemical and structural integrity. This packaged acellular dermis can be stored under refrigeration for at least 2 years. Rehydration of the freeze-dried dermis for a minimum of 10 minutes in physiologic saline using a normal sterile procedure yields a pliable collagen template for cell repopulation. 5, record 47, English, - acellular%20dermal%20graft

Squamous cell carcinoma is a cancer that originates in the squamous cells(keratinocytes). Squamous cells(keratinocytes) are the main structural cells of the epidermis. Squamous cell carcinoma usually develops on sun-exposed areas but may grow anywhere on the skin or in the mouth, where sun exposure is minimal. It may develop on normal skin but is more likely to develop in precancerous skin growths caused by previous sun exposure(actinic keratosis). Squamous cell carcinoma is characterized by its thick, scaly, irregular appearance. 5, record 55, English, - squamous%20cell%20carcinoma

The process of ecdysis is initiated by a hormone apparently secreted by the thoracic glands which lie behind the brain and close to the oesophagus. The action of this hormone, or possibly of several hormones, is to stimulate the secretion of moulting fluid from glands in the epidermis. This fluid dissolves away the endocuticle, loosening the harder exocuticle and epicuticle which together form the outer layer of the exoskeleton. The insect then contracts its abdominal muscles, increases the blood pressure in the thorax and causes the cuticle to split in the weakest part, usually the mid-dorsal line. The insect emerges leaving the cast-off skin or exuviae behind. After a period of growth a new cuticle is formed. 4, record 60, English, - ecdysis

In aeolid nudibranchs the mantle is extended into long finger-like projections called cerata(singular, ceras). The cerata contain branches of digestive gland and often this is visible through the ceratal epidermis. In aeolids the tips of the cerata contain cnidosacs which usually store nematocysts(stinging cells) that are obtained from ingested cnidarian prey, such as hydroids, sea-anemones and soft corals. If disturbed, the nudibranch is capable of discharging these stinging cells through a terminal pore in the ceras; this is an effective deterrent to predatory fish. 1, record 93, English, - cerata
