A scaly or plate-like malignant tumour of the skin that sometimes spreads (metastasizes) to other organs.

Squamous cell carcinoma is a cancer that originates in the squamous cells (keratinocytes). Squamous cells (keratinocytes) are the main structural cells of the epidermis. Squamous cell carcinoma usually develops on sun-exposed areas but may grow anywhere on the skin or in the mouth, where sun exposure is minimal. It may develop on normal skin but is more likely to develop in precancerous skin growths caused by previous sun exposure (actinic keratosis). Squamous cell carcinoma is characterized by its thick, scaly, irregular appearance.

Le carcinome [anciennement épithélioma] est une tumeur maligne (cancéreuse) qui se développe aux dépens des tissus de revêtement, comme la peau ou les muqueuses. [...] Le nom de carcinome épidermoïde signifie que les cellules touchées par ce type de cancer reproduisent une structure semblable à l'épiderme. On le retrouvera donc essentiellement au niveau de la peau, de la bouche, des poumons, de l'anus, du vagin et du col de l'utérus.

OBS

Carcinome épidermoïde, malpighien et pavimenteux stratifié (rarement employé) sont strictement synonymes. Carcinome spinocellulaire désigne le carcinome épidermoïde de la peau.
