Groupe de sorosilicates monocliniques, formant une suite isomorphe. Ils contiennent du calcium, de l'aluminium, du manganèse, du fer et parfois du cérium, du magnésium et du chrome. Les cristaux sont aciculaires ou prismatiques, ou bien en grains irréguliers de couleur variant du gris au blanc, du vert au rose, plus rarement noirs «allanite». Très fréquents comme constituants de nombreuses roches métamorphiques et éruptives.
