EPILIMNION [5 records]

Record 1 2020-05-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
DEF

The layer in a thermally stratified body of water in which the temperature gradient is at a maximum.

CONT

In the oceans, this zone of rapid temperature change starts at 10–500 m below the surface and can extend down to more than 1500 m.... In thermally stratified lakes in summer the thermocline separates the warm surface waters(epilimnion) from the cooler deep waters(hypolimnion).

OBS

thermocline: term and definition standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
DEF

DEF

The water above the thermocline in a stratified body of water.

OBS

epilimnion : term and definition standardized by ISO.

OBS

Plural: epilimnia.

  • epilimnia

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
DEF

Record 3 2020-05-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
DEF

The water below the thermocline in a stratified body of water.

CONT

Water's unique temperature-density relationship results in the formation of distinct layers within nonflowing bodies of water... During the summer, a surface layer(epilimnion) is heated by solar radiation and, because of its lower density, floats upon the bottom layer, or hypolimnion. This phenomenon is called thermal stratification.

OBS

hypolimnion: term and definition standardized by ISO.

OBS

Plural: hypolimnia.

Key term(s)
  • hypolimnia

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
DEF

Record 4 2020-05-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
CONT

The transition layer between the upper water body(epilimnion) and the lower water body(hypolimnion) in a stratified lake is referred to as the "metalimnion, "whereas if a single depth is to be reported to represent the division between layers, the section of highest temperature gradient with depth within the metalimnion is often employed, and may be referred to as the "thermocline. "
