A kyphotic deformity of the lower thoracic spine developing insidiously in children about the period of puberty. On radiographs, irregularity of vertebral contours due to arrested or abnormal vertebral growth is observed in association with Schmorl’s nodes. Prolapse of intervertebral disc tissue anteriorly may also be seen as well as wedging or reduction of height of the anterior portion of the vertebral bodies. 5, record 7, English, - Scheuermann%26rsquo%3Bs%20disease
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Although the predominant involvement of the epiphysis of the vertebral rim was initially interpreted as evidence of osteonecrosis, considerable disagreement as to the cause and pathogenesis of this disorder subsequently developed. The basis for the nodes is not clear, although stress-induced intraosseous displacements through congenitally or traumatically weakened portions of the cartilaginous endplate appear probable. 5, record 7, English, - Scheuermann%26rsquo%3Bs%20disease

4, record 7, French, - maladie%20de%20Scheuermann

Some confusion exists regarding the terms carpitis and osselets; therefore, a definition is appropriate. Carpitis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the carpal joint that may involve the fibrous joint capsule synovial membrane, associated ligaments, and bones of the carpus ... Osselets has been defined as a traumatic arthritis of the metacarpophalangeal joint. It is more appropriate to restrict the term osselets to describe the thickening associated with synovitis and capulitis of the fibrous joint capsule at the dorsal aspect of the metacarpophalangeal joint. Ossification can develop as a chronic change. 3, record 20, English, - osselets

Ischemic necrosis of the femoral capital epiphysis is characterized initially by dense areas appearing in the femoral head. These areas may take the form of a bandlike linear opacity along the articular surface, or may follow the epiphyseal line. Widening of the epiphyseal cartilage plate may then occur. Spherical segmental opacities then appear, giving the so-called "snow-cap" appearance. [From GBONE, 1980, p. 184. ] 3, record 23, English, - snowcap%20appearance

Catterall attempted to improve the predictive value of early radiographic changes in Perthes disease by identifying four radiologic signs that indicated a capital femoral epiphysis at risk for collapse. These findings are(1) Gage's sign(a small, osteoporotic segment that forms a transradiant V on the lateral side of the epiphysis) ;(2) calcification lateral to the epiphysis;(3) lateral subluxation of the femoral head; and(4) a transverse epiphyseal line. Murphy and Marsh found that these four head at risk signs and a fifth, diffuse metaphyseal reaction, correlated better with a poor radiologic result than did the degree of epiphyseal involvement.
