Mass of air which has been over regions close to the equator for several days and which, therefore, has become fairly warm.

Air masses are classified as equatorial if they develop near the equator, tropical if they originate in the low latitudes, and polar if they originate in the high latitudes. Equatorial air masses are warm and very moist, tropical air masses are warm, and polar air masses are... well, cold.

Equatorial (E) air masses, [hot and extremely humid], rarely visit the contiguous United States and almost never reach Canada, but these air masses are important weather factors for the southern nations of North America: southern Mexico, Central America and many of the Atlantic island nations.

La raison en est simple : ainsi placés, ils peuvent facilement «arroser» différentes zones du globe et relayer des données provenant de deux points très éloignés. C'est cette localisation équatoriale qui explique l'orientation au sud d'une antenne parabolique installée depuis la France et plus globalement l'hémisphère nord.

The world's biggest Low is caused by hot air rising near the equator(it is called the Equatorial Low). Its position moves north and south during the year as it follows the movement of the overhead sun and the latitude of greatest heating. The Equatorial Low is the heat ’engine’ that powers the entire global circulation. Cloud and rain are produced by rising air, making the Equatorial Low also the world's main rain-producing area and the place of the great tropical rainforests.

Toutefois, au nord de l'Australie et de la Papouasie-Nouvelle Guinée, il existe une masse d'eau chaude, la plus chaude de la Terre. C'est à partir de cette eau chaude que se forment les nuages qui entraînent les moussons. Cette masse d'eau chaude est gardée en place grâce aux alizés, vents soufflant des hautes pressions subtropicales vers les basses pressions équatoriales. À cause de ces vents, les eaux sont plus élevées d'une trentaine de centimètres dans l'ouest du Pacifique que dans l'est.
