The most basic mathematical description of drug distribution and elimination is the one-compartment model.... One-compartment models utilize a single central compartment and assume that equilibrium is rapidly/instantaneously achieved with tissues. Although the drug in the body, as a single "compartment, "cannot be measured, an assumption is made that the changes in blood(or other sampling compartment) reflect a proportional change in tissue drug concentrations. The rate of drug elimination from the central compartment in a one-compartment model is a first-order process.... In the case of a one-compartment model, [clearance] is linear... regardless of the mechanism of clearance.

The most common mechanism of absorption for drugs is passive diffusion. This process can be explained through the Fick law of diffusion, in which the drug molecule moves according to the concentration gradient from a higher drug concentration to a lower concentration until equilibrium is reached. Passive diffusion can occur in an aqueous or lipid environment.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the latitudinal and seasonal patterns of the early twentieth century warming are remarkably similar to the patterns predicted by the equilibrium response general circulation model study of Manabe and Stouffer for a quadrupling of CO2 concentration. If this similarity was a result of early twentieth century CO2 forcing then it may indicate that equilibrium models can give realistic results... If CO2 [is] not the dominant forcing mechanism then this similarity supports the idea that the latitudinal patterns of climatic change are largely independent of the type of forcing.

The classical mechanism of Hume depended primarily on relative prices. It seems to have assumed, essentially, that employment is always full : that in the long run, trade simply moved a society from one point on its domestic production-possibility frontier to another; that foreign trade never moved society inside its [production-possibility] frontier or pushed it outward toward that frontier from an initial underemployment equilibrium.
