An equimolar mechanical mixture of crystals each one of which contains only one of the two enantiomers present in a racemate.

OBS

The process of its formation on crystallization of a racemate is called spontaneous resolution, since pure or nearly pure enantiomers can often be obtained from the conglomerate by sorting.

racemic mixture: The term is confusing since it has been used as a synonym for both "racemate" and "racemic conglomerate." Usage strongly discouraged.

Un racemato o modificación racémica puede pertenecer a una de estas dos clases diferentes: o bien el sólido cristalino es un conglomerado, esto es una mezcla mecánica de cristales de dos enantiómeros puros, donde cada molécula enantiomérica está separada en su propio cristal enantiomérico, o bien el sólido cristalino es un compuesto racémico (este es el caso más generalizado) en que las dos moléculas enantioméricas están presentes en iguales cantidades pero ordenadas dentro de la estructura de un único cristal.

It does not exhibit optical activity. The chemical name or formula of a racemate is distinguished from those of the enantiomers by the prefix (±)- or rac- [in italics] (or racem-) [in italics) or by the symbols RS and SR.

OBS

The prefix dl- (dextro-, for dextrorotatory, and levo-, in full levorotatory) has also been used but should be avoided. The symbol "±" is nowadays to be preferred.
