It is customary to contrast orogenic movements, revealed by true deformation, with epeirogenic movements, which imply a vertical displacement of an entire land mass. The latter should, in turn, be distinguished from eustatic movements, resulting from changes in sea level.

Les mouvements épirogéniques apparaissent ainsi comme étant périodiques, résultant d'enfoncements et de soulèvements répétés. Il faut reconnaître que ce sont les phases d'enfoncement qui paraissent les plus nettes car ce sont celles durant lesquelles les sédiments s'accumulent avec le plus de développement.

Les mouvements tectoniques [...] sont de deux types [...] : les mouvements orogéniques [...] qui donnent naissance à des chaînes de montagnes [...]; les mouvements épeirogéniques ou épirogéniques, c'est-à-dire des soulèvements d'ensemble d'un bloc entier de continent, sans qu'aucune fraction du bloc soit très mobile par rapport à une autre : toutes sont affectées, solidairement, d'un exhaussement accompagné en général d'un basculement ou de très larges bombements.
