The application of free-flying space robots(FFSR) has achieved significant progress because of their ability to perform on-orbit servicing missions autonomously or telerobotically instead of human performing hazardous, monotonous and costly extra vehicular activities(EVA). Some applications of FFSR include inspection, repairing, assembling, refueling and docking with other spacecraft. As these tasks are dangerous for astronauts to perform in the space environment, space robots are expected to be utilized and therefore, a high level of accuracy is required for a successful mission. 2, record 2, English, - free%2Dflying%20space%20robot

To help the spacewalkers stay cool during an EVA [Extra-Vehicular Activity], researchers developed the liquid cooling-and-ventilation garment. The garment is a one-piece body suit with a zippered-front. Its soft nylon lining is covered with an additional layer of Spandex and a network of plastic tubing that surrounds the body. This tubing is used for cooling and ventilating the suit. A set of tubes is used to circulate cool liquid, while another set of tubes is used to transport sweat, carbon dioxide, and any other contaminants into the Primary Life Support System to purify the atmosphere within the suit. 5, record 5, English, - liquid%20cooling%2Dand%2Dventilation%20garment

In astronauts, decompression sickness can occur when they go from the higher pressure in the Shuttle to the lower pressure in the suits 1. 3 psi. Preparations for an EVA begin about a day ahead of time, when the pressure inside the space shuttle is lowered from 14. 7 pounds per square inch(psi equivalent to the pressure at ground level on Earth)... So, to prevent the bends, the pressure differential between the Shuttle and the suit is reduced to flush the nitrogen slowly from their blood. Then, after the astronauts are suited up, they sit in the airlock for about an hour breathing pure oxygen to eliminate any remaining nitrogen, which can last from 40 to 75 minutes. 5, record 14, English, - decompression%20sickness

4, record 14, French, - mal%20de%20d%C3%A9compression

Westinghouse Lunar Color Camera. Used on Apollo's 12 & 14. The camera was mounted inside the Modularized Equipment Stowage Assembly(MESA) in Quad 4 of the Lunar Module(LM) Descent Stage. This gave the capability of broadcasting the first steps of the astronauts as they climbed down the ladder of the LM at the start of the first EVA [extra vehicular activity]. The astronauts would then detach the camera from it's mount in the MESA, mount the camera on a tripod, and carry it away from the LM to show the progress of the EVA. This system was the same TV camera used on previous missions inside the CSM, with a few minor modifications to adapt it to the lunar environment. The first segment to be launched into orbit, designated Z1, will not permanently attach to other truss segments. The Z1 segment is a 10 ft (3 m) cubelike truss made from six machined bulkheads that are bolted together. The truss houses four control moment gyroscopes that form part of the guidance, navigation, and control system. The location of Z1 is nearly in the middle of the station, which makes it an ideal location for the gyroscopes. A micrometeor shield composed of three sheets of 0.25 in. (6 mm) aluminum about 5 in. (127 mm) apart protects the sensitive gyroscopes from debris. The 18,300 lb (8,300 kg) Z1 segment is currently scheduled to be launched by the end of this year. The truss is a transitional structure that will connect to the pressurized Unity module already on orbit. Astronauts will tighten 16 motorized bolts on the circular coupling on the Unity module side into nuts on Z1 and connect the associated utility plug-ins. Pressurized units generally have circular couplings and nonpressurized unit connectors are rectangular. 10, record 21, English, - Z1%20truss

Cap Mats and Strips. Matrix Technologies EVA cap mats and strips are engineered to maintain a strong seal at all times on tubes, microplates and blocks.... Each cap mat features alphanumeric designations as well as traditional row and column indicators to simplify orientation of the cap mat over the corresponding tubes or wells. 1mL cap mats or strips effectively seal 0. 75mL tubes, 1. 4mL tubes, 1mL blocks and 96 well microplates.... The SepraSeal [trademark] Cap Mat System allows each tube in a 96-tube rack to be sealed individually as easily as applying a standard cap mat. After the mat is sealed on the rack, simply remove the backing plate to leave each tube individually sealed. Caps are made of an advanced elastomer and offer an excellent vapor barrier for both water and DMSO even at temperatures down to-80°C. Sepraseal caps can be... pierced and resealed and are available as solid caps or pre-slit for easier piercing. For ease of use and maximum efficiency, we offer the SepraSeal cap-removal tool that can be used to remove a single cap or an entire row at once. Caps can then be reinserted into tubes or ejected. EVA Gloves(left and right). If you look at the bottom of an EVA glove, you’ll see that it has a ring. This ring is used to snap onto the sleeve of the upper torso. It also contains a wrist bearing that is used to help the astronaut rotate his hand. On the opposite end of the glove are rubber finger caps. The scientists chose silicone rubber so that the astronauts could have some sense of touch when working with equipment and tools. Along the gloves are loops. Tethers connected to small tools can be latched onto the loops to prevent the items from floating off into space. The Joint Airlock itself has two rooms, the "Equipment Lock" and the "Crewlock." The Equipment Lock is similar to a locker room, in that it is the primary area where the crew members don and doff their spacesuits ... It is also the primary area for servicing the spacesuits and stowing them. The Crewlock, which is separated from the Equipment Lock by a hatch, is where spacewalkers open the outer hatch and actually begin their excursions into space. It is similar in size to the shuttle’s airlock. Although the Joint Airlock Module is only 20 feet (6.1 meters) long, getting from one end to the other can be a slow process as astronauts prepare for their EVAs [Extravehicular Activities]. 7, record 25, English, - Quest%20airlock

The Joint Airlock(also known as "Quest") is provided by the U. S. and provides the capability for ISS-based Extravehicular Activity(EVA) using either a U. S. Extravehicular Mobility Unit(EMU) or Russian Orlon EVA suits. Before the launch of this airlock, EVAs were performed from either the U. S. Space Shuttle(while docked) or from the Transfer Chamber on the Service Module. Due to a variety of system and design differences, only U. S. space suits could be used from the Shuttle and only Russian suits could be used from the Service Module. The Joint Airlock alleviates this short term problem by allowing either(or both) spacesuit systems to be used. 8, record 25, English, - Quest%20airlock

9, record 25, French, - sas%20de%20sortie%20Quest

The EVA 3-D roller wrench operates using 3-D rollers connected with springs installed between concentric cylindrical races. The pins "disengage" one set of rollers, which allows its "engaged" partner roller to roll up the wedge surface of the hub when the wrench is turned in one direction. Rotation in the other direction causes the roller to roll down the wedge surface, disengaging the clutch for overrunning. This action allows the wrench to apply torque in one direction and free spin in the other like a traditional ratchet wrench. Moving the pins clockwise so that they engage neither roller will cause the wrench to become a rigid bar, allowing the wrench to apply torque in both directions. Rotating the pins further clockwise will cause them to "disengage" the rollers that were previously engaged, allowing the wrench to apply torque in the opposite direction as before. 2, record 26, English, - EVA%203%2DD%20roller%20wrench

The Orlan spacesuit was used for Russian EVA’s on Salyut, Mir, and the International Space Station. It was designed by the Zvezda OKB [Russia: Experimental Design Bureau], and derived from the Kretchet suit intended for use on the lunar surface. It consisted of flexible limbs attached to a one-piece rigid body/helmet unit. The suit was entered through a hatch in the rear of the torso. The exterior of the hatch housed the life support equipment. Maximum operation time was three hours when the Orlan-D version of the suit was first used on Salyut 6. Later Orlan-DM versions of the suit increased this period to nine hours. The integrated design meant that no external hoses were required as in the American space suits. The suit standard pressure was 0.40 atmospheres, so that a prebreathe period of only 30 minutes was required. Electrical power and communications were via an umbilical cord to the station. Control of the suit was via a panel on the chest, with the markings in mirror image. The cosmonaut viewed the panel using a mirror on the wrist of the suit. 8, record 31, English, - Orlan%20spacesuit

We are developing a relatively simple, modular, low mass, low cost robot for space station EVA [Extra-Vehicular Activity] that is large enough to be independently mobile on the station exterior, yet versatile enough to accomplish many vital tasks. Because our design is for a robot that is independently mobile, yet capable of conventional manipulation tasks, we call it the Self-Mobile Space Manipulator or(SM) 2. The robot can perform useful tasks such as visual inspection, material transport, and light assembly. ESA has presently only developed a basic end effector(BEE) for the European robotic arm. Although the BEE can support EVA and has a good overall performance, its size and mass make its use impractical for most of the operations involved in servicing payloads external to the spacecraft. The dexterity needed for these operations requires a much smaller, compact gripper, equipped with an array of sensors which fully monitor both its status and operations. Furthermore, it is desirable to keep to a minimum the limitations and constraints imposed on the payload by the interface requirements. Functions performed by the gripper are : recovery of insertion misalignments; positioning of an object at a target location; securing an object firmly and releasably; provision of mechanical power; monitoring gripper status and operation. 2, record 35, English, - basic%20end%20effector

Displays and Control Module(DCM)... Along the top are switches for power, communications mode selection, caution and warning. There is also a switch that controls the water that is fed to the Liquid Cooling-and-Ventilation Garment. A digital display is used to monitor the various suit circuits. At the top left of this module is an emergency relief valve. If the primary life support system were to ever malfunction, the astronaut would still have access to the secondary oxygen pack. To activate this secondary oxygen pack, all the astronaut would have to do is open a purge valve by squeezing a set of pinchers. This valve releases air pressure on the chest plate-this is the same valve that is used at the end of EVA [Extravehicular Activity] to depressurize the suit. Also on the left, a step down from the purge valve, is the mechanical-suit pressure gauge. Along the right-hand side of the module, are two switches : the ventilation-fan switch and the push-to-talk switch. The ventilation-fan switch can activate and deactivate a fan which circulates air through the helmet and other parts of the suit. The push-to-talk switch is similar to one you would find on a CB [Citizen Band] radio. If the astronaut wants to talk, he has to push the button to be heard, and if he wants to receive voice messages, he has to release the button. 3, record 44, French, - sas%20du%20mat%C3%A9riel

Extra Vehicular Activity Radiation Monitor... The purpose of EVARM is to carry out flight experiments to investigate and characterize the doses received by different parts of an astronauts body(e. g., skin, eyes, and blood-forming organs) during an EVA. The doses will be analyzed with respect to the time and position of the EVA as well as the orbit, altitude, and attitude of the Station. A relatively new type of electronic radiation dosimeter, the Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor(MOSFET) will be used to collect dose measurements. 5, record 47, English, - extra%20vehicular%20activity%20radiation%20monitor

EVARM is designed for use with the NASA Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or spacesuit, worn by both Space Station and Space Shuttle crewmembers during Station operations. The experiment consists of a storage/badge reader unit and 12 badges - a set of three each for up to four spacewalkers. The sets are designated EV-1, EV-2, EV-3 and EV-4, corresponding to the designation of each potential spacewalker. When not in use, the badges are placed in the storage-reader box, which is stored in the Human Research Facility payload rack. The badge contains a silicon chip specially designed by Thomson-Nielsen - called a Metal Oxide Silicon Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) - that continuously measures total radiation dosage and a connector that plugs into the badge reader. The reader that can download badge is shown placed in a pocket in the lower left leg of an astronaut liquid cooling garment. Badges also are placed in the front torso and fabric communications cap of the spacesuit undergarment (NASA/JSC). During normal operations, the Station crew will record the background radiation dosage on each badge and transmit it to the ground every week. Shortly before a spacewalk by Station or Shuttle crew members, the crew will measure the radiation dosage of each badge to be used in the spacewalk. A set of three badges will be inserted into pockets sewn into the front torso and front leg areas of the liquid cooling undergarment and the top of the fabric communications cap of each spacesuit. Those locations were selected because of the radiation hazard to sensitive soft tissues such as eyes and internal organs, as well as the hazard to the skin on the arms and legs, which are not as well shielded as the torso. Shortly after the spacewalk, the crew will plug each badge set into the badge reader. They will later transfer the data to the Human Research Facility laptop computer for transmission to the payload team on the ground. 6, record 47, English, - extra%20vehicular%20activity%20radiation%20monitor

The Simplified Aid For EVA Rescue(SAFER) is a propulsive crew self-rescue device, worn by astronauts when conducting an extravehicular activity(EVA, or space walk) on the International Space Station(ISS) or while the Space Shuttle is docked to the Russian Mir space station. SAFER is a "mini-jetpack" that attaches to the backpack of the space suit. If an EVA astronaut accidentally becomes untethered and drifts away, he can activate SAFER and fly back to the space craft. SAFER was designed and developed by a team of engineers and EVA experts at NASA-Johnson Space Center. 5, record 66, English, - simplified%20aid%20for%20EVA%20rescue

A Crew Equipment Interface Test(CEIT)... The CEIT is a test conducted two to three months prior to a shuttle launch. Astronauts who will be the on-orbit users of the flight hardware verify that there are no interface problems between that hardware and the astronaut users. Astronauts are mostly trained at Johnson Space Center, whereas the flight hardware is located at Kennedy Space Center. The CEIT provides the astronauts with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the flight hardware. During this test, fit checks are made between flight hardware that have not yet been verified. Fit checks with EVA tools and hardware planned to be handled during EVA are also conducted. Training that is difficult to conduct using mockups are also conducted. 3, record 68, English, - crew%20equipment%20interface%20test
