CONT

Currently, three distinct methods for performing on-orbit maintenance exist : intravehicular activity(IVA), extravehicular activity(EVA), and extravehicular robotics(EVR)... EVRs are conducted using the Space Station Remote Manipulator System(SSRMS) alone or in conjunction with EVA to perform external maintenance. The SSRMS may be used to move the crew member to the work site or move the work to the crew member.

[A platform which serves as] an astronaut toolholder and positioning aid.

CONT

The Portable Work Platform(PWP)... is a mobile base of operations that will enable EVA [Extravehicular Activity] crew members to reach various parts of the station. It is designed to attach to the end of the space station's mechanical arm... The PWP offers greater movement with a swiveling foot restraint, a storage location for tools, and temporary storage for large space station ORUs [Orbital Replaceable Units]. The platform comprises several components : an articulating portable foot restraint(APFR), a tool stanchion, and a temporary equipment restraint aid(TERA).

CONT

We are developing a relatively simple, modular, low mass, low cost robot for space station EVA [Extra-Vehicular Activity] that is large enough to be independently mobile on the station exterior, yet versatile enough to accomplish many vital tasks. Because our design is for a robot that is independently mobile, yet capable of conventional manipulation tasks, we call it the Self-Mobile Space Manipulator or(SM) 2. The robot can perform useful tasks such as visual inspection, material transport, and light assembly. It will be able to work independently or in cooperation with astronauts, and other robots.

The APFR [Articulating Portable Foot Restraint] secures a crew member's feet and allows the astronaut to adjust his body position at a work site. The APFR has three independent joints that are activated by EVA astronauts. Yaw and roll are controlled by foot pedals. The APFR can yaw 360 degrees and can roll 180 degrees. Pitch is controlled by a know at the base of the APFR. The APFR and pitch 180 degrees. The APFR may be used either as the core unit of the PWP(in conjunction with the TERA and tool stanchion) or as a stand-alone unit. Eight APFRs are baselined for the space station.
