A specific type of tenosynovitis which involves the tendons of two specific muscles on the thumb side of the hand - the abductor pollicis longus (APL) and the extensor pollicis brevis (EPB). These muscles are located in the forearm and their tendons travel across the wrist (through a "tunnel" termed the first dorsal compartment) on the thumb side to produce movement of the thumb. The walls of the affected tendon sheaths (basically protective coverings for the tendons) become thickened and inflamed.

The precise cause of de Quervain’s tenosynovitis is unknown. It is thought that excessive friction from overuse of the thumb and wrist (excessive and repetitive gripping and grasping actions) may be a factor, leading to thickening of the tissues in the compartment housing the APL and EPB tendons. For example, cases have been described in bricklayers, those who sew, piano players, fly fishermen, and golfers. It has also been hypothesized that the condition in some cases may be associated with acute injury to the involved area (direct blow to the forearm or wrist, falling on the thumb).

Evidence now exists for the presence of antitermination sequences within the E. coli chromosome; for example, just past the promoter for rrnG which encodes a rRNA. Nothing is known about how antitermination works in E. coli at this point. However, this suggests that even in the absence of bacteriophage lambda, antitermination is believed to control the level of the transcripts for genes critical to cell growth. This suggests a way that lambda can commandeer the cell by using its pN to increase the levels of primase and sigma 70 for its own replication and gene expression.

Altering positional information with grafting experiments: A region called the zone of polarizing activity (ZPA) is the reference point for indicating the position of cells along the anterior-posterior axis of a vertebrate limb bud. The ZPA is located where the posterior margin of the bud is attached to the body.

Retinoic acid induces a pattern of digits in anterior half wing buds that lack the zone of polarizing activity... The positional signal localized to the posterior zone of polarizing activity or ZPG region of the vertebrate limb is transiently expressed during development and a decline in ZPA signaling is accelerated when posterior cells are dissociated and cultured in vitro. The evidence that cultured posterior cells display a precocious decline in ZPA signaling when compared to in vivo studies suggests that a factor present in the limb bud maintains or stabilizes ZPA signaling during limb outgrowth...
