If the fundamental principle guiding management is only permanent disposal, then options for waste management will be very limited since all management solutions must meet the safety and environmental standards set out by regulatory authorities. For example, considerations of such factors as volume, the disruption which removal might cause, costs and local preferences may make long-term management in situ a practical option for some of the existing wastes. The Task Force feels the uranium mine and mill tailings and the phosphogypsum wastes are best dealt with in this manner and that in situ management should at least be considered for several other waste deposits... 2, record 4, English, - in%20situ%20management

Although regulations have not yet appeared under the Act, ELUC has developed "sector" Guidelines. The Guidelines set forth procedures for developers to coordinate their project planning with a staged, streamlined assessment of the environmental, social and economic impacts of a proposed project, which may ultimately lead to fulfilling regulatory requirements under existing statutes. Procedures have been or are being prepared for : linear, coal, metal mine and major site-specific developments. Once a project has been designated under one of the "sector" Guidelines, the administrative procedures to be followed will be specified. 1, record 6, English, - sector%20guideline

1, record 6, French, - directive%20sectorielle

In eastern Canada problems specifically related to deep mining are beginning to manifest themselves. As the Cape Breton Development Corporation(CBDC) extends both multi-and single-seam coal extraction beyond 700 m below seabed, the problems will become more pronounced. Strata mechanics research at the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory has been directed towards the evaluation of roadway support systems; assessment of existing mining practices related to gateroads and packing systems; mining subsidence; gas/rock outbursts; and field instrumentation to evaluate mine stability by gathering data on deformation and in situ stress. 2, record 7, English, - rock%2Fgas%20outburst

1, record 7, French, - coup%20de%20toit%20et%20d%C3%A9gagement%20de%20grisou
