To produce the UV index forecast, Environment and Climate Change Canada takes data from ozone measuring stations across the country to determine the present thickness of the ozone layer. A computer model then forecasts the thickness of the ozone layer over Canada for the next day. Combining the forecast of the ozone layer with data about the height and the angle of the sun gives a UV forecast for the next day, for a clear sunny sky. Adding the amount of cloud predicted in the weather forecast then gives the amount of UV that can actually be expected. The forecast gives the maximum amount of UV expected for the day. On a clear day with no clouds, this occurs at noon(or 1 p. m. for those on daylight time), when the sun is highest in the sky. 3, record 13, English, - ultraviolet%20index%20forecast

1, record 13, French, - pr%C3%A9vision%20de%20l%27indice%20UV

The wind is a continuous succession of gusts and lulls(quiet intervals) associated with equally rapid changes of direction over a range which may exceed 30°. The mean wind speed over a period of time is therefore the mean of many gusts and lulls. Usually only the mean wind is forecast, unless the gusts are expected to be a significant feature. For instance, fresh, gusty southwest winds indicates that the mean wind speed will be between 17 and 21 knots and the mean wind direction will be from the southwest, but that there will also be gusts to speeds significantly higher than the mean. 8, record 23, English, - mean%20wind%20speed

The theory of planned behaviour(TPB) started as the theory of reasoned action in 1980 to predict an individual' s intention to engage in a behaviour at a specific time and place. The theory was intended to explain all behaviours over which people have the ability to exert self-control. The key component to this model is behavioural intent; behavioural intentions are influenced by the attitude about the likelihood that the behaviour will have the expected outcome and the subjective evaluation of the risks and benefits of that outcome. The TPB has been used successfully to predict and explain a wide range of health behaviours and intentions including smoking, drinking, health services utilization, breastfeeding, and substance use, among others. 1, record 24, English, - theory%20of%20planned%20behaviour

As a result of the changing practice environment, medical schools and community-teaching hospitals are now looking for large numbers of clinician-teachers to see patients(generate income) and to teach students and residents... Typically, a clinician-teacher is expected to teach and see patients. Some institutions expect some research or scholarly productivity as part of the overall effort. The exact amount of time devoted to each varies with the institution, but generally the need for patient care outweighs the need for teachers and researchers... Most clinician-teachers are granted an academic title but are rarely granted tenure. Halloween is celebrated on October 31st in Canada. Halloween is a favorite family celebration-a time for traditions such as dressing in costumes, trick-or-treating around the neighbourhood, and carving pumpkins. Children dress up in funny or scary costumes and go "trick or treating, "and neighbours are expected to respond by giving them small treats. Adults may also dress in costume for Halloween parties. Halloween(the evening before All Saints or All Hallows Day) is a secular celebration based on ancient Druid customs dating back to 700 B. C. The Druids, a Celtic religious order in ancient Britain, Ireland and France, believed that the souls of the dead returned to mingle with the living on "hallowed eve, "October 31. Each year on that night, the Druids would make bonfires and offer sacrifices of crops and animals, and individuals would dress in costumes to disguise themselves from these spirits. 1, record 42, English, - Halloween

3, record 42, French, - Halloween

Proteins are degraded on a time scale that ranges from minutes to days. Maintenance of memories that may last a lifetime requires more stable alterations, such as those associated with persistent changes in gene expression. A recently discovered family of genes called immediate early genes(IEGs), which are activated rapidly by brief bursts of action potentials, may provide a crucial link. As expected of master switches that initiate long-term changes in the brain, IEGs encode transcription factors, proteins that regulate the expression of other genes. 1, record 47, English, - immediate%20early%20gene

1, record 47, French, - g%C3%A8ne%20pr%C3%A9coce%20imm%C3%A9diat

The Palmer Index was developed by Wayne Palmer in the 1960s and uses temperature and rainfall information in a formula to determine dryness. It has become the semi-official drought index. The Palmer Index is most effective in determining long term drought-a matter of several months-and is not as good with short-term forecasts (a matter of weeks). It uses a 0 as normal, and drought is shown in terms of minus numbers; for example, minus 2 is moderate drought, minus 3 is severe drought, and minus 4 is extreme drought. ... The Palmer Index can also reflect excess rain using a corresponding level reflected by plus figures; i.e., 0 is normal, plus 2 is moderate rainfall, etc. 8, record 69, English, - Palmer%20drought%20severity%20index

Palmer Drought Severity Index(PDSI)... compares the actual amount of precipitation received in an area during a specified period with the normal or average amount expected during that same period. It was developed to measure lack of moisture over a relatively long period of time and is based on the supply and demand concept of a water balance equation. Included in the equation are amount of evaporation, soil recharge, and runoff and temperature and precipitation data. 9, record 69, English, - Palmer%20drought%20severity%20index

Open GISs are integrated systems and tools that provide interoperability among data and processes for solving geospatial problems. One aspect of providing interoperability is to overcome the difficulties caused by the data conversion required in current GIS implementations. GIS users are usually faced with the problem of converting geospatial data from many sources and GIS platforms; it has been found that up to 80% of the time and cost of any GIS implementation is spent on populating the GIS database. Open GISs are expected to overcome this obstacle by utilizing geospatial metadata and spatial data transfer standards. Although opinions currently differ on geospatial data and geoprocessing standardization and on the specifics of the architecture of open GISs, it is generally agreed that, at a minimum, they should automate the task of populating GIS databases. In addition to data interoperability, open GISs should facilitate simple strategies for application development(model integration), and provide solutions on highly distributed heterogeneous computing environments that include computing resources ranging from desktop machines to supercomputers. This course addresses the current trends and approaches for building open GISs and discusses future directions for these GISs. Also covered are the benefits of open GISs to GIS users and developers. Recent media reports have painted a relentlessly gloomy picture of the status of AIDS drug development. Yet much useful information on treatment emerged at the 10th International Conference on AIDS in Yokohama, Japan(August 7-12, 1994). Encouraging treatment developments presented in Yokohama include the following : Recombinant human growth hormone therapy significantly increases weight gain as represented by fat-free lean body mass among people with AIDS-related wasting. AZT treatment dramatically reduces the rate of HIV transmission from mother to infant. Acyclovir co-treatment with anti-HIV therapy significantly increases survival time among people with AIDS. Oral ganciclovir appears to be an effective primary prophylaxis for cytomegalovirus disease. The protease inhibitor drug saquinavir reduces viral load and increases CD4 cell counts significantly more when used in a triple combination with AZT and ddC compared to 2 double combinations(AZT plus ddC or saquinavir plus AZT). Quantitative polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and branched chain DNA(bDNA) testing for measuring HIV load is expected to become a major new tool to help guide individual treatment decisions and to evaluate anti-HIV therapies in clinical studies. 1, record 73, English, - AIDS%20drug

There is one class of goods, it seems, in respect of which there may be a sale even though they are not existing at the time of the contract. The legal property in such goods can pass to the buyer without any need to conform to the provisions of the Act relating to the transfer of property. Such goods are those which have "potential existence". The distinction existed at common law between future goods to be manufactured or acquired by the seller, the position with respect to which has been considered above, and future goods in which the seller had what was called "a potential property". Such goods comprehended things which were the natural produce or expected increase of something already owned or possessed by the seller, for example, hay to be grown in a field, wool to be grown on sheep owned by the seller, or milk to be yielded by the seller's cows in the coming month. 1, record 80, English, - potential%20property

Alternative methods. In order to reduce the need of laboratory animals the CFN has, in co-operation with the Swedish pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca and Pharmacia, supported research on alternatives to animal models ever since 1980. It has supported projects in areas such as toxicology, pharmacology and cell biology. Basically, two different kinds of projects have been considered for financial support, i. e. projects which may be expected to result in a change from a method involving animals to an alternative method in a short time and projects relating to fundamental research that is likely to contribute to the development of new non-animal methods in the longer term. 2, record 86, English, - alternative%20method

Currently, no programming is available in HDTV, and it is not expected to begin in volume in Canada for quite some time. Environmental protection is accepted as needed in the Czech Republic, but the degree of implementation depends on possibilities of investing into new technologies and desirable activities. The main problem is a lack of financial streams. The Czech Republic is in general tackling the same problems as the industrially advanced countries were one or two decades ago. It seems, however that it will have much less time to eliminate them in view of the expected date of entry into the European Union. 1, record 98, English, - financial%20stream

Assembling a roster of bank owners like Citibank is key for Transpoint, industry observers say. Such a strategy would supply a stream financing for technology development as well as a fat base of corporate clients, consumer customers and billers. 2, record 98, English, - financial%20stream

In contracts negotiated under the PFI the distinction between current and capital spending will be less obvious. A typical contract will contain an element of capital spending for providing the asset and current spending for the provision of service from it over a period of time, with the two merging into one financing stream. 2, record 98, English, - financial%20stream

Collateral pledging and valuation--1. DCS [Debt Clearing Service] not available at all--An emergency in DCS can affect LVTS [Large Value Transfer System] in at least two different ways. Firstly, a failure in DCS could affect the ability of participants to pledge collateral for LVTS purposes. In this case the Association would need to communicate with CDS to determine the expected time for CDS [Canadian Depository for Securities Limited] to be back up and fully operational. At this point, a decision would have to be made by CDS whether to move to CDS's interim manual pledging mechanism. Any delay in the availability of the DCS pledging function of more than two(2) hours would require the move to the interim pledging mechanism. 1, record 100, English, - interim%20manual%20pledging%20mechanism

1, record 100, French, - m%C3%A9canisme%20manuel%20provisoire%20de%20remise%20en%20nantissement
